Top 3 Best Horror Games like Alan Wake

Alan Wake and Alan Wake II are some of the best horror games on the market. Its unique storytelling and gameplay style make it a blast to play through, even if it’s from familiar territory. Many horror games have been released since then that are similar in design to the game, gameplay, or narrative-wise. Here’s our top 3 picks.

3. Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019)

A modern remake of the iconic classic: Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake strikes all the check marks of an amazing remake of a cult classic.  Completely remade from the ground up while sticking closely to the source material, the RE2 remake is regarded as one of the most beloved video game remakes of all time. Effectively recapturing the horror theme of the original game while getting a massive modern touch-up. Modernized controls, a third-person camera angle, as well as resource management from the original, make it a challenge to play while also naturally evolving the format of the game from its outdated ways.

Although it may lean more towards the action-packed and science-fiction genre than Alan Wake’s supernatural and more horror-centered genre, the RE2 remake still manages to capture the essence of Alan Wake, the protagonists from both games fend off countless hordes of monsters created by evil entities, whether it’s by a corporation or a supernatural entity. Both games have you try to save a city from the horrors brought by evil and darkness. If the player is looking to branch out into other genres with the same or at least, similar gameplay style to Alan Wake, the RE2 Remake is a great place to start.

2. Amnesia: The Bunker

Amnesia: The Bunker is the most recent installment in the Amnesia series by Frictional Games. This horror game takes place during the brutal years of WWI, the player takes control of a lone soldier who is trapped in a bunker, without power and without a means to escape. The player must venture out into the darkness of the vast bunker to solve the mystery behind all the deaths in the bunker and find a way to escape the bunker.

The player isn’t alone, however, as the creature responsible for the genocide still lurks in the darkness, waiting for its next victim. The player only has a revolver and a noisy, rechargeable flashlight to aid in lingering in the darkness as well as protection from the creature. Resource management is crucial as scarce supplies could mean life or death and could mean escape to freedom or being forever trapped in the darkness. Its unique narrative based on real-world history along with fictional elements makes it an exciting game to play through. For players looking more into the psychological horror aspects and survival horror games, Amnesia: The Bunker is a worthy candidate.

1. Control

Made by the same devs behind the first Alan Wake title, Control is a frontier for horror games in the same genre as Alan Wake. Control takes inspiration from the supernatural horror of Alan Wake, although in a different direction. The game takes the player in the life of Jesse Faden, a victim of an incident that involved her and her younger brother with an Object of Power, the Slide Projector. The incident left Jesse bound to an entity that resulted from the incident, and Dylan, Jesse’s brother, was taken by the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC).

Many years later, Jesse finally uncovers the headquarters of the FBC for answers about the Ordinary incident and what happened to her brother. Much of the gaming community has compared the fundamentals of the concept of Control to another popular fictional organization: The SCP Foundation, It wouldn’t be surprising if this horror game borrowed much inspiration from the SCP Foundation. Although Control is more action-packed and straightforward in terms of gameplay compared to Alan Wake, the horror factor still lingers.

Control shares more of the supernatural horror of Alan Wake, as a matter of fact, Control and Alan Wake canonically take place in the same universe, separate narratives but still interconnected. One of the DLCs for Alan Wake II even features the protagonist from Control. This standalone title is a must-play for players who enjoy Alan Wake.

Departing Thoughts

These horror games are just some of many horror titles worth checking out. Alan Wake stands the testament of time as one of the most uniquely driven story narratives in gaming history. Many new titles will do best to draw inspiration from how Alan Wake’s narrative can keep a player invested and still be a delight to play. There’s nothing more entertaining than a simple yet expansive story of a lone hero going up against the forces of evil and darkness.
