How to Find Shooting Stars
For shooting stars to appear, the player must wait for a meteor shower to pop up on their island. Meteor showers occur on random days throughout the year between 7 PM and 4 AM. However, they only appear at night if there was no precipitation earlier that day. Shooting stars only appear if the sky is clear or partly cloudy. A normal meteor shower is relatively small, featuring approximately 5 to 30 shooting stars per hour. Occasionally, a larger meteor shower will occur, and Isabelle will announce it when you start the game. Villagers may also mention this event in casual conversation. These showers can have up to a hundred shooting stars per hour.
Meteor showers are heavily intertwined with Celeste, the younger sister to the Museum custodian Blathers. A meteor shower will always occur when Celeste visits your island. However, meteor showers can still happen without her presence. If you are speaking to her for the first time, she will briefly explain how wishing functions. She will also reward you with a DIY recipe for the Star Wand. On subsequent visits, interacting with her rewards you with additional DIY recipes for Zodiac-themed items. Once you obtain every DIY recipe available from her, Celeste will instead bestow star fragments.
Wishing on Shooting Stars
To wish upon a star, the player must first ensure they are not holding any tools. A sound will jingle when a shooting star appears in the sky. Pan the camera upwards by pushing up on the right analog stick, making the sky visible. As the star spans the sky, press the A button to perform the wish animation. Your character will close their eyes and clasp their hands together as if praying. If successful, the star will grow larger and brighter, accompanied by a twinkling sound effect. You can only make one wish at a time. However, the quick animation allows you to perform multiple wishes in succession should the sky be littered with shooting stars.
The rewards from the shooting stars won’t be immediate. On the following day after making your wishes, you will find star fragments lining your beach. The number of fragments you will receive depends upon the number of wishes you made the previous night. You can receive up to 20 fragments, so any additional wishes during a meteor shower won’t yield extras. But by inviting other players to your island and having them make wishes, you can receive up to 20 more fragments. Be mindful when acquiring the fragments during the next day as they won’t spawn all at once. Retrieve as many as possible, then enter and exit a building to prompt the remaining fragments to appear.

Star fragments are rare resources used in several crafting recipes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They come in several forms, including normal yellow fragments, large white fragments, and birthstone-colored Zodiac fragments. Zodiac fragments spawn according to real-world astrological periods, based on the time of year. You’ll need to wish on stars throughout the year to collect all the different kinds.
