Yian Kut-Ku is officially joining the roster for Monster Hunter Wilds. The Strange Bird’s return was shown off during the Capcom Online Program as a part of the Tokyo Game Show. That makes Yian Kut-Ku the second returning monster that’s been confirmed for the game with the first one being Rathalos. Fans of the Bird Wyvern are already flocking to social media to express their excitement about the update.
The History of the Strange Bird
Yian Kut-Ku was first introduced in the very first Monster Hunter game, which makes it 20 years old just like the series. Since the first game, the Bird Wyvern has appeared in 10 other games in the main series with the most recent being Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. It has also been featured in Frontier and several spin-off games including both Monster Hunter Stories games. While Yian Kut-Ku is an old friend of many hunters, for players who started the series with World, it will be a whole new experience.
The Strange Bird’s iconic appearance features its fan-like ears, large yellow beak, and its bright pink coloring. The monster is very light, which makes it fast, agile, and great at flying. It also has a powerful sense of hearing thanks to its large ears. It also spreads out its ears when threatened to make itself seem larger than it actually is. With a diet mainly consisting of insects, they love to devour creatures like Konchu, which might be returning along with Yian Kut-Ku. The Neopterons are infamous for harassing hunters by getting into the perfect position to interrupt them when they are trying to take down a monster.
Wondering About Wilds
In the slightly extended release date reveal trailer for Wilds, aptly called an “Extended Kut“, a flock of Yian Kut-Ku can be seen lounging around. This area is a part of the Scarlet Forest locale that features ancient-looking ruins and perhaps bones of gigantic monsters. The flock only appears for a few seconds, and no real information is verbally given. However, analyzing the frames brings certain questions and theories to mind.
Lynians called the Wudwuds are seen getting fairly close to the monsters without any of them becoming aggressive or batting an eye. This makes the monsters seen in that particular area seem rather docile compared to all the other large monsters shown in the trailers so far. It can be theorized that the Wudwuds have a type of connection with the flock and maybe other large monsters in the game. This would make sense since in the most recent trailer, the Wudwuds demand that the Hunter respect their woods. If this is the case, this leaves two burning questions about Yian Kut-Ku. Will the Hunter actually be tasked with hunting one? If so, why?
Conclusion
The return of Yian Kut-Ku is not a surprise to those with a keen eye and a talent for theorizing. In one of the earlier trailers, Gemma was first shown to carry around a plush version of the monster. This made many fans correctly assume that Yian Kut-Ku would be making its return in Monster Hunter Wilds. Even for those hunters who knew that the monster would make a comeback, the confirmation at the end of the “Extended Kut” trailer brought even more excitement. Fans are excited to see what other beloved monsters on past rosters will be making their own reappearance in a wild way and how they will impact the story.
