Two new video game publishers have entered the scene to help indie game developers in all of their endeavors. Both of these producers showed off some of the titles they’re involved with at Summer Game Fest 2024. In a world where AAA games are becoming more expensive, more and more indie games are starting to do well. Players are turning to them for a more affordable option to meet their gaming quotas. With more funding and support from these two publishers, their capabilities now have a higher limit.
Blumhouse Games Helps Horror
You may recognize the company behind the new Blumhouse Games. You may have even seen some of the many horror movies Blumhouse Productions has been putting out since its founding. This includes the live-action Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN, The Black Phone, and many more. founder of this production company, Jason Blum, took to the stage. Joining him was the creative lead for Blumhouse Games, Louise Blain. They took turns explaining what this incredible project means to the horror game industry.
Blumhouse Games is working with indie game developers like Vermila Studios, Cozy Game Pals, and others to give them the spotlight and larger player base they wholeheartedly deserve. This includes helping Vermila upgrade and add content to its previously released game, Fear the Spotlight. The new edition will be available in this Fall.
Six titles were shown off during the event, and they all have different styles and types of scares to offer. This means that there will be frights available for just about anyone who likes to get their blood flow going while playing a horror game in a dark room. As a giant fan of all things horror, this is one of my favorite projects announced at this year’s Summer Game Fest. I’m excited to see just what the current and future developers will bring to the scene.
Outersloth Helps Fellow Indie Game Developers
The second name in this list of new video game publishers is Outersloth. It’s a new venture from the people of fellow indie game company Innersloth. That’s the studio that made Among Us and The Henry Stickmin Collection. The creative and charismatic team has started a fund to help fellow indie game developers get the financial help they need to cover the costs that come with making their dream games become a reality.
At Summer Game Fest, Innersloth community director Victoria Tran and programmer Forest Willard helped show off some of the games receiving this funding. The six games that were shown were vibrant and eye-catching, and they also were several different genres. I found this to be another display of just how beautiful and diverse indie games can be, especially when they have an extra boost to really get them going.
Summer Game Fest Takeaways
There was a lot of focus put on indie games as well as the talented teams behind them during the Summer Game Fest. At the beginning of Friday’s first event, well-known video game journalist Geoff Keighley showed off a chart filled with the 10 best-selling games on Steam from January to May of this year. Only two of them were considered to be what he called “big company games.” The other eight were made by indie game developers, including solo developers.
Keighley went on to say that this is a reminder for the big studios to treat their developers right because there are many paths to success in today’s industry. This is a sentiment that I wholeheartedly agree with, especially when news breaks about certain studios treating employees roughly or even more layoffs. I believe it is also a reminder that small or mid-sized teams can craft stories and worlds that are just as incredible as the studios with millions of dollars in their accounts.
