2025 may be one of the biggest years yet for gaming. With many genre-defining games slated for release, it’s hard to overstate how impactful this year’s lineup already looks. While some games have already come out, the rest of this year will undoubtedly feel packed with quality and quantity. Whether you like PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or PC, there’s always more to look forward to in the world of gaming. So, without further ado, here are the eight most anticipated video games for 2025.
8. DOOM: The Dark Ages
As a prequel to the original remake, DOOM from 2016, many fans are eager to see if all this will truly live up to the hype. A prequel set to explain the rise of one of gaming’s most iconic heroes sounds like a great idea. Published by Bethesda Softworks and developed once again by id Software, let us all continue to support original sequels and prequels for quality franchises in 2025.
7. Ghost of Yotei
Taking place three hundred years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, one of the most liked video games from 2020, the Japanese culture and beauty will return in this new experience. A new PlayStation 5 exclusive is always great to see. Exclusives bring competition, which leads to better products and games across the entire industry.
6. Borderlands 4
The next installment in the Borderlands series. According to its Steam page, the game will be released on September 23rd with intense co-op action and “outrageous” enemies. A lot could change between now and the date of release, but I’ll certainly be surprised if Borderlands 4 doesn’t deliver causal fun in the vein of games like Overwatch and Fortnite, at the very least.
5. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Set to release on August 28th, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was always bound to be a worthy concept. While the boundaries and deadlines of modern gaming may favor simple ports, a full 3D recreation of everything with enhanced visuals and sound can still work wonders. Given how lackluster the last entry, Metal Gear Survive, turned out, we can only hope that this will be a good way to rinse out the aftertaste!
4. The Outer Worlds 2
The Outer Worlds 2 will be a direct sequel to the 2019 original and will follow an alternate future. Taking on a more humorous idea of Sci-Fi was bold at the time, so we can only hope they’ll be able to pull it off as well again. After all, The Outer Worlds won Best Original Game at the Game Critics Awards in 2019.
3. Pokémon Legends: Z-A
A new Pokémon is always a big deal for its fandom, but the one in 2025 may be special. Following in the footsteps of 2022’s Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a new adventure in Lumiose City surely won’t disappoint. While little is known about this game at the moment, fans are waiting patiently for their next journey in Game Freak’s wonderful world of cute critters.
2. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
A new Metroid Prime game has been one of the most heavily requested games for Nintendo to make. Right next to franchises like F-Zero, Metorid is often neglected by the developers at Nintendo in favor of their more prominent series like Mario Kart or Kirby. Fans have been asking for a new entry in the Metroid Prime series since the release of Metroid Prime: Federation Force in 2016. While it may seem dreary at times, we may finally be in luck this year. Metorid Prime 4: Beyond should finally be released in 2025.
1. Grand Theft Auto VI
It’s hard to find an online gaming discussion nowadays that doesn’t feature a brief conversation about the next GTA game. Despite the long development times modern games require, many are still incredibly excited for a new version of a sandbox game unlike any other. Maybe Rockstar Games could invest in a sequel to Bully: Scholarship Edition next. Until then, the sixth installment in the Grand Theft Auto series will be a momentous occasion for fans of the series all around the world.
Final Thoughts
The 2025 lineup for game releases looks stellar. This may very well be one of the greatest years ever for games. Not to mention the addition of new hardware like the Switch 2. All in all, I’m very excited for the rest of this year.
