Devil May Cry is considered the grandfather of modern action games. There have been tons of hack-and-slash games inspired by Hideki Kamiya’s 2001 action classic. Some of these games listed here are going to be directly inspired by Devil May Cry, and some will be partially inspired by it. Either way, these three games are all games to try if you can’t get enough of Dante’s stylish demon killing.
Bayonetta, Devil May Cry’s Spiritual Successor
Devil May Cry’s director, Hideki Kamiya has made tons of action games in his time. Most notably, in 2008, he directed Bayonetta, a high-octane action game published by his game developer studio, Platinum Games. Bayonetta is an incredible action game for many reasons. Kamiya is known for his charismatic main characters. Bayonetta, the titular main character, is a stylish, scantily-clad witch who gives Dante a run for his money. Bayonetta is a series, and the latest game, Bayonetta 3, came out in 2022.
The first game was entirely directed by Kamiya. In this game, it’s all about combos, weapons, and guns. Bayonetta has a variety of swords, hammers, and weapons to defeat the angelic hordes. Yes, in this game she fights angels, instead of demons. Interesting dichotomy, especially in comparison to Devil May Cry. This game has a ton of Kamiya’s energy, whether it’s the funny dialogue, the ranking system that gives you higher points for performing well in combat, or the insane boss fights. Bayonetta is the start of a great series, and this first game still holds up very well.
Metal Gear’s Best Spin-Off
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not only the game with the coolest name, but it is an incredible action game. It is also made by Platinum Games, the same studio behind Bayonetta. In this game, the main playable character is Raiden, the controversial playable character from Metal Gear Solid 2. In this game, you fully play him as a cyborg ninja, and it is incredible. This game has a pretty simple combat system that is quite similar to Bayonetta. Light attacks, as well as heavy attacks with customizable combos and weapons.
But that simplicity brings it up in a way. The harder difficulties make the game super replayable, just like Bayonetta. There are tons of awesome bosses that will leave the player thinking about it for days. Speaking of those bosses, the soundtrack of this game is incredible. The music is dynamic, and it has vocals, so the vocals kick in as the boss fight gets more and more climactic. In the final parts of the fight, the vocals kick in and just make the fights so hype and memorable. This game came out over ten years ago, and the internet still references it and loves it to this day. Let that be enough proof of how awesome it is.
Spider-Man’s Most Underrated Game
Spider-Man makes an appearance here with Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. This game is pretty underrated and has never gotten a modern release on updated hardware. It came out in 2008, just like Bayonetta. Web of Shadows out of all of these games is the least like Devil May Cry, admittedly. It is an open-world action game. What makes it like Devil May Cry is the combat design.
This game is incredibly focused on crazy combos and stringing them together. Spider-Man has never fought in any other game like he does in this game. He can web-strike enemies, which consists of webbing himself onto the enemy, and either punching them in the air or dragging them through the concrete. It is so cool and energetic. This game is all about making combos and keeping the count high. It’s awesome. No matter which of these games you pick, you’re bound to enjoy it if you love Devil May Cry.
