The Epic Games Store will be turning six years old this December, and while it has earned its fair share of controversy. It has also earned its fair share of fans, myself included. The free games it gives away every Thursday are what sets the Epic Games Store apart from other digital sellers like Steam, EA App, and Ubisoft Connect. Besides free games, the Epic Games Store is also home to some great games. Those games are Alan Wake Two, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Kingdom Hearts.
Alan Wake Two
Alan Wake Two was an Epic Game Store exclusive, unlike the other games on this list. While it will be seeing a physical release this year, there’s little chance of it being available digitally anywhere except the Epic Games Store. Alan Wake Two is the sequel to Remedy’s 2010 video game, Alan Wake. While it took 13 years before an Alan Wake sequel was released, it’s clear Remedy never lost its passion for the franchise.
Sam Lake who has been a writer for Remedy ever since the first Max Payne came out and the rest of the Alan Wake Two writers created an absolute masterclass in storytelling. Even though the sequel came out 13 years after the first Alan Wake, it was easily able to immerse me into its narrative like all Remedy games do. If it wasn’t for Baldur’s Gate Three also coming out in 2023, Alan Wake Two could have easily won Game of the Year.
Even though it didn’t win GOTY, it still won Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction, which shows how good of a game it is. It even had one of the best music videos. I still listen to. While some hardline gamers out there refuse to play it because it’s on the Epic Games Store, they’re doing themselves a clear disservice by choosing to ignore it. Luckily, now that it’s getting a physical edition, hopefully, some of the Epic Games Store naysayers will pick it up.
Guardians Of The Galaxy
While Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t exclusive to the Epic Games Store anymore, it’s still a good game worth playing. GOTG isn’t connected to the MCU and instead has its own self-contained story which honestly was a smart choice. Speaking of choice, the game also offers dialogue choices which while not altering the story a ton can make things easier or harder depending on what you pick. The gameplay while fun can feel repetitive at times and I’m not ashamed to say my favorite parts of the game were where I was able to explore the environment between combat sections.
Taking a cue from the MCU, the Guardians of the Galaxy game also has an amazing soundtrack with songs like Don’t Fear The Reaper, We Built This City, and I Ran So Far Away included. If you’re looking for a game to play that feels similar to Mass Effect and has an incredible soundtrack, the Guardians of the Galaxy game is for you. GOTG is on the Epic Games Store as well as Steam.
Kingdom Hearts On The Epic Games Store
Having been exclusive to the Epic Games Store since 2021 before making its way to Steam earlier this year, Kingdom Hearts more than qualifies for this list. First released back in 2002, Kingdom Hearts enthralled many gamers with its gameplay, inclusion of Disney and Final Fantasy characters, and its music. While there are many games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, the Epic Games Store luckily received the remasters that combined the games, such as Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 ReMIX.
Final Thoughts
Those are some good games that are/were exclusive to the Epic Games Store and are worth playing. Have you played any of these games? If so, which are your favorites? If you also use the Epic Games Store, which is your favorite game on there? Don’t hesitate to leave a comment down below, I’m always interested in seeing what others are playing. Recommendations are how I found some of my favorite games.
