Let’s be honest here: Everyone loves Legendary Pokémon. There are 72 Legendary Pokémon cataloged throughout the franchise’s decades-long history. They are a massive part of Pokémon‘s international brand. In addition, they are an integral part of the franchise. Catching these Pokémon is a tradition found in practically every mainline game. For this article, we will rank three of the best Legendary Pokémon. After all, who does not like catching these ultra-rare and ultra-powerful monsters?
Suicune Was A Cover Mascot Once
Suicune lands the number three spot on our list. Suicune first debuted in the Generation II games Pokémon Gold & Silver. Suicune is a water type legendary member and part of the Legendary Beasts trio in Johto. Like the other Legendary Beasts, Suicune’s backstory is shaped by Brass Tower. Suicune represents the rain that doused the fires from the wreckage. Interestingly, Suicune has a paradox variant in Pokémon Scarlet, the Walking Wake. This turns the normally canine Pokemon into a vaguely Dinosaurian creature.
Suicune was a cover mascot for a Pokémon game, Pokémon Crystal. Shocker, right? It is surprising to think about due to Suicune not being a ‘version exclusive’ Legendary. Crystal was a solitary update to the original Gold and Silver. Its most notable addition was the option for a female protagonist, which was solidified as an option for all games moving forward. Suicune also had a pivotal role in the story, encountering the player numerous times. Overall, Suicune is a unique choice due to its unconventional role as a mascot and its origins.
Rayquaza’s Takes Flight
Rayquaza blasts onto the scene at number two. This Flying/Dragon Pokemon debuted in Generation 3 under Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire. Like Suicune, Rayquaza had all the importance in a third game, Pokémon Emerald. Rayquaza desires to end the conflict between Groudon and Kyogre. The three of them are a trio, named the ‘Super-Ancient Pokémon’ but dubbed the ‘Weather Trio’ by fans. Rayquaza is both the third member and the Trio Master. He’s the unstoppable force needed to stop Kyogre and Groudon’s rampage.
Rayquaza stands out due to his massive popularity across the fandom. In 2020’s Pokémon of The Year poll, Rayquaza was the most voted Hoenn Pokémon. He’s the only Legendary Pokémon to have a Mega Evolution besides Mewtwo. Mega Rayquaza also gained an entire episode in the remastered Generation 3 games Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. Rayquaza is a strong contender for the best Legendary Pokémon. For many fans, Rayquaza remains one of the best of the best.
Mewtwo’s The Most ‘Legendary’ of Legendaries
Surprise, surprise, Mewtwo slides into the number one spot. Mewtwo is the psychic type clone of the mythical Pokémon Mew. He was created by Team Rocket to make the most ‘powerful’ Pokémon on the planet. Mewtwo is the first big ‘Legendary’ Pokémon that fans were introduced to. He remains a popular choice and is beloved by the fans. Mewtwo stands out as a terrifying threat due to his psychic powers. Any time you get to catch him, that same psychokinetic power is in your grasp.
Mewtwo Strikes Back was the first animated Pokémon film and heavily featured the legendary threat. Mewtwo’s exposure to humans and Team Rocket made him deeply misanthropic. I think Mewtwo’s added layer of complexity just further pushes him into higher territory. For many fans, Mewtwo is not just a Legendary Pokémon. He is the Legendary Pokémon, and his actions defined the trends that later generations would follow.
Miraidon and Koraidon Are Just Adorable
Mewtwo’s the winner, but he’s not the last Legendary we’ll be ranking. Miraidon and Koraidon make the list as a shared honorable mention. Miraidon and Koraidon are introduced in Generation IX, featuring the most recent mainline games, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. Miraidon is an Electric/Dragon Type, while Koraidon is a Fighting/Dragon Type. Both characters represent opposite sides of time travel. Miraidon represents the technological future, whereas Koraidon represents the primal past.
Both Miraidon and Koraidon were chosen because of their development. Unlike many Legendary exclusives, they spend more time bonding with their trainers. This sandwich thief quickly buddies up to the player character. As the game continues, Miraidon and Koraidon gain new abilities. The bond between the legendary and their trainer grows as well. Miraidon and Koraidon are both excellent additions to the franchise.
Favorites Are Important!
This list only counts four Legendary Pokémon who have captured our interest. There are plenty of worthy Pokémon that still deserve mention, however. For example, the Legendary Birds remain steady favorites among the crowd. Keldeo and the Swords of Justice are also well-liked because they are based on the Three Musketeers. Giratina’s otherworldly design and antagonistic behavior make them memorable. There are still plenty of Pokemon to name, but these ‘Mons are some standout examples.
Legendary Pokémon are one of the franchise’s most treasured gimmicks. These creatures help diversify the franchise’s lore. They offer players powerful Pokémon to catch. Fans always have a soft spot for these powerful creatures. Do you have a favorite Legendary Pokémon?
