The Nintendo Switch has collected and produced a massive repertoire of hit titles during its lengthy tenure. Virtually all of these titles have been collected on the impressive digital store of the console. Of the many genres of games one can find on the Switch eShop, RPGs seem to be doing the best. From both the classic franchises of Nintendo and the creations of other companies, many RPG franchises have tossed their hat in the ring with this blockbuster console. Here are the three best RPGs to find on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
3. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Since its release in 2004, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been celebrated as one of the best JRPGs and titles from the huge Mario franchise. The story follows Mario as he has to stop a villainous organization known as the X-Nauts from opening the titular door. Along the way, he visits new locales and joins forces with many allies, such as Goombella and Koops, who quickly became fan favorites.
With the port to the Switch eShop, virtually everything about the game has been refurbished. Thanks to modern technology, the already gorgeously aged graphics have been brought into 4K. Furthermore, the game also gave a unique take on turn-based combat based on timing attacks and even added platforming elements. This game is just one of many that highlight the versatility of the Mario franchise.
2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Out of all of Nintendo’s main franchises, the Fire Emblem series is the one that best exemplifies their ability to create a hit JRPG. Set on the continent of Fodlan, a mercenary turned professor must choose between three houses with their ideals, casts, and plotlines. Of the best RPGs for the Switch, this is for those who like political intrigue on a grand scale. This game gave fans many of the series’ most iconic characters, such as Edelgard, Bernadetta, and Smash’s own Byleth.
Three Houses combines the best of the tactical RPG and social simulator genre. As with any good Fire Emblem title, the complex stratagems and heroic courage needed to succeed capture the sense of being a general in a grand fantasy epic. However, like Persona, this game is just as much a social simulator through various mechanics and sidequests. The power of camaraderie is at the core of the Fire Emblem series, and as a leader, these bonds drive your team.
1. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance; the best of the Switch eShop
Upon its original release, Shin Megami Tensei V received fair reviews, but its story was seen as fairly dull. Due to its lack of the same depth gamers came to expect from the series, it was seen as a disappointment that fell below the shadow of its spinoff, Persona. Two years later, fortunately, the Shin Megami Tensei series would return in full force. A mysterious young woman named Yoko Hiromine has joined the Nahobino on his quest, sending the plot into shocking and unexpected territory.
Virtually every aspect of the original game was polished with a coterie of new demons, an arsenal of new spells, and an entirely new area. Of course, at the heart of the game is the new story, which introduces many new players, turns other characters’ roles on their heads, and even creates an entirely new version of the law and chaos factions that have come to define the series. This gem for the Switch eShop went from a standard entry in the series to one of the best from the JRPG medium.
