Over the years, Star Wars became one of the most iconic science fiction franchises. As such, the creators have also given gamers dozens of acclaimed video games across several genres. This list included classic RPGs such as KOTOR and lighthearted comedies for all ages, such as Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga.
Of course, multiplayer games have been no exception. With many characters, locations, and endless force abilities at their disposal, the Star Wars franchise created many games that could be shared among fans. Here is a breakdown of the three best multiplayer titles from the Star Wars franchise.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
Years before EA’s controversial, microtransaction-heavy reboot of the series, the original 2005 classic was critically acclaimed as one of the best examples of a war shooter on the market. Given the “war” in the series title, the franchise naturally lends itself to military fiction. The game’s main campaign follows a veteran clone turned Stormtrooper through his campaigns under the Galactic Republic and Empire. This new story adds a grounded perspective to the main events of the films.
Much like the massive Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises, the game features dozens of maps and several game modes such as “Conquest” and “Capture the Flag.” However, players can now have these showdowns throughout the iconic locations of the Galaxy, such as Naboo and Kashyyyk, and even take part in famous battles from the films.
Furthermore, players can also bring several iconic vehicles, such as the AT-RT, onto battle to wreak havoc on the enemy. As one final touch, players can charge in as dozens of iconic champions from the saga, complete with meme-worthy voice acting and interactions, just like the simulations!
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
While Battlefront captured the monumental scale of the Empire’s military campaigns, Jedi Outcast captured the more force-oriented battles with its strong representation of both the light and dark sides of the Force. Set in the pre-Disney New Republic, players take on the role of Legends icon Kyle Katarn as he tracks down the Sith among the Imperial remnant. As the title implies, the story follows Luke’s new generation of Jedi, now given far more development than in the sequel trilogy.
To many gamers, Jedi Outcast became a classic example of a PvP arena with its strategically designed maps and wide arsenal at combatants’ disposal. Furthermore, the developers took great pains to give the game fluid, accurate, and impactful lightsaber combat. With virtually endless combinations of abilities, the game’s arenas capture the vicious, intimate duels and massive clashes that define the saga. Nowadays, the game is a time capsule for Legends and an early version of arena games.
The Old Republic; The Massive Multiplayer Online
Finally, this brings us to the most grandiose multiplayer project from the galaxy: The Old Republic. In 2003, Mass Effect creator BioWare released the classic RPG Knights of the Old Republic, which built upon the lore of the Legends canon. Nearly a decade later, that galactic era would create an entire MMO for players to explore.
Throughout the films and expanded universe material, Star Wars established a galaxy with thousands of iconic worlds and ages of lore. Therefore, the franchise created the perfect template for an MMO. The developers did their best to capture the Sith Empire and the Jedi Republic at their height by adding subgroups and developing characters for each faction.
Given the players’ numbers on both sides, it captured the scale of a galactic struggle between the two ideologies. Finally, players could customize their race, class, and loadout to live out their fantasy of being a hero in the Star Wars universe. With every DLC, players got to share in another new Star Wars adventure. In a world where MMOs are a dying breed, this game demonstrates how they can bring the world of a popular IP to life.
