Listen To This: 3 Best Things To Know About AI-Powered Headphones

Before artificial intelligence (AI) becomes sentient and turns human beings into their slaves, we’re actually benefitting from the technology.

AI has improved our access to healthcare and education while aiding us against climate change and poverty. What’s more, your phone and computer can now have a voice to talk to you because of AI.

Even though we’ve made great technological improvements with our own hands, it would be a lie to say that AI technology hasn’t quickened the pace to push our limits even more.

Out With The Old, In With The New

At first, noise-canceling headphones were considered revolutionary when they were released as they allowed people to tune out unnecessary noises so they could enjoy what they wanted to hear.

And then boom! AI comes through and makes noise-cancelling headphones old news.

So far, the headphones only work through a smartphone app or by voice commands and include different categories of sounds, such as chirping birds or crying babies, that its users can choose to listen to.

What Is Semantic Hearing?

A small team of researchers from the University of Washington included artificial intelligence into our headphones by creating learning algorithms that filter sounds, which they would later define as semantic hearing.

By wearing these AI-assisted headphones, people can focus on or ignore specific sounds around them without neglecting their surrounding environment.

For instance, a driver would be able to tune out traffic noise to listen to car honks or emergency sirens without issue.

The Process

To create these headphones, two technical contributions had to happen.

First, the neural network had to extract background noises and other interfering sounds to isolate the actual targeted sound for the headphones to work.

Next, the headphones would capture audio from whatever smartphone it’s connected to and process the sound.

Everything Has Its Downsides

These newly designed headphones may be groundbreaking technology, but even they can struggle to process someone’s voice while they’re engaged in conversation with you.

Therefore, to avoid this problem, the creation and processing of sound must happen simultaneously; which means, the headphones must rely on a connected device to work, and cannot function on a cloud server.

The AI Assisted Headphones

Overall, AI-assisted headphones are another great advancement in combining artificial intelligence with our technology. In fact, these headsets have made great strides in various places, such as offices and streets, proving that this product may be ready for a commercial release.
