3 Characters That Need to Be Added to Mario Kart 8D

Mario and numerous more racers on one of 8D's racing tracks.

Mario Kart is one of Mario’s more notable spinoff titles and has garnered a beloved franchise. Since 1992’s Super Mario Kart, the series has been making the rounds with each new installment. 2017’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Kart ‘8D’ is the latest in a long line of racing entries for the series. There are still plenty of good character choices to add, and these three people below should make the list.

What Nabbit brings to the table

Introduced in 2012’s Super Mario Bros U, Nabbit is a rotund rabbit-like thief bearing a sack. Nabbit’s gimmick is that he steals items from the Toad Houses to mess with players. In his debut game, Nabbit is treated as a minigame threat that the players will chase and catch in 100 seconds. Since Super Mario Bros U, Nabbit has made numerous appearances in the series, often as a recurring or playable character. His first stint as a playable character was in the sequel, 2013’s New Super Luigi U. His latest appearance was in last year’s Super Mario Bros Wonder, joining numerous other playable characters.

Nabbit has had a minor presence in the Mario Kart video games, starting with 2019’s mobile game, Mario Kart Tour. Nabbit joined the game through the second week of the Wild West Tour, hosted in mid-2020. Nabbit’s special skill is ‘Lucky Seven’, summoning seven different items around the player’s kart that they can use. Nabbit’s appearance in Mario Kart Tour poses an interesting idea. Offering him a spot on Mario Kart 8D‘s roster could further endear the character to new fans. In addition, it can reinforce his position in the series as a recurring character with a solid row of appearances.

Dixie Kong Could Be Fun

Dixie Kong debuted in 1995’s Donkey Kong Country 2, also known as Donkey Kong Country: Diddy Kong’s Quest. The game portrays Dixie as Diddy’s girlfriend, helping rescue Donkey Kong from the evil clutches of the Kremlin Krew. Dixie Kong has since made many appearances in Donkey Kong’s catalog. Dixie Kong has even played a guest role in Mario’s spinoff titles, such as Mario Tennis and Super Sluggers.

Dixie Kong is another character who made her racing debut through Mario Kart Tour. She joins the game in early 2020’s Jungle Tour, which also featured the return of Funky Kong. Dixie Kong’s special ability is the triple bananas, unleashing a cluster of banana traps that make her enemies slip. Dixie Kong is a popular character, but one that fans have quietly wanted to see join the roster. Her chemistry with Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong makes her a worthy pick as well. Dixie is the first female Kong to be playable, and her role in the Donkey Kong Country series has made her a fan favorite.

E. Gadd is an unusual addition

Professor E. Gadd first appeared in 2001’s Luigi’s Mansion, acting as an ally to Luigi in his ghost-hunting endeavors. E. Gadd is the founder of Gadd Science, Incorporated, which has created many items throughout the franchise. His most notable contribution is the Poltergust series, an iconic tool that lets Luigi hunt ghosts. Gadd has made appearances through the original Luigis’ Mansion, 2013’s Dark Moon, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and a remake of the first game.

Luigi’s Mansion is an iconic spinoff of the Mario series, and it has many fans. E. Gadd is another fan-favorite character from the game who could join the series. Luigi’s archenemy, King Boo, is already a playable racer, having joined in 2003’s Double Dash. E. Gadd was originally datamined in Mario Kart DS, which would be his debut as a playable character. However, in the finished game, he was replaced with Dry Bones. E. Gadd joining Mario Kart 8D could redeem his cut absence from a prior title.

New Additions All-Around!

Mario Kart has many racers, and there are still many more who can join the series. These characters are only a few choices, and there are plenty more. Other characters, such as the Piranha Plant, King Bob-Omb, and even Plessio could work as additions to the series.

With the crossover nature of Mario Kart as of late, the game can also lend itself to more outside-the-box thinking. The addition of Splatoon and Zelda has further endeared the series to fans outside the franchise. Overall, Mario Kart 8D still has plenty of interesting additions the franchise could use.
