3 Incredible Bosses in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Final Battle

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice also features a collection of amazing bosses. Most of the boss fights focus on dueling, requiring players to attack by taking advantage of opening and parrying the boss attacks. There are very few attacks that require players to run away or dodge. The game features 14 boss fights, all of them being unique and none of them being bad or boring. This list will go over the 3 most incredible boss fights in the game.

Genichiro Ashina

Players fight Genichiro Ashina three times in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Once in the opening mission, where players are expected to lose, once in the main boss fight, and finally, as a part of the final boss. This ranking is considering the main fight with Genichiro. Genichiro is the first proper dueling boss that players will encounter in the game.

This boss fight is designed in such a way that forces players to get good with the parry mechanic. The rest of the boss fights that came before Genichiro allowed players to perform well without focusing on parry and deflecting but this is not the case in this boss fight.

Genichiro Ashina is a three-phase boss fight that teaches the players a lot about the core gameplay mechanic of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The first two phases focus on deflecting and parries whereas the third phase allows players to get familiar with lightning attacks. Lightning attack deflection plays a great role in the gameplay later on and this boss fight teaches players well.

There are also plenty of variations in the boss fight notable example being when Genichiro switches to Bow between the fights. This fight also features a lot of thrusting attacks which players can counter by using Mikiri Counter.

This Boss fight can be quite challenging because it is the first boss in the game that requires you to focus on deflection and parries. The switch up to bow brings variation to the fight, but it can be annoying if Genichiro spams it over and over again. This breaks the momentum of the amazing dueling gameplay.

Owl (Father)

Owl (Father) is an optional boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and allows the player to fight Owl in its prime form. Players have already fought the boss beforehand if they choose to refrain from the Shura ending. This boss fight does a wonderful job of keeping old attacks and moves of the boss and adding variety that keeps the identity of the fight while making it more challenging.

Owl (Father) is a two-phase boss fight and has some new and interesting attack combos. This fight also removed the annoying aspects of the fight like poison or healing block. Instead, Owl is much more aggressive in the fight, forcing players to get their deflection and parrying skills top-notch. He also provides decent attack windows that players can take advantage of and is overall one of the most satisfying bosses to learn.

The second phase of this boss fight can be a bit annoying due to the visual clutter that appears when Owl uses magic and teleportation. Keeping track of the boss when he suddenly disappears in the middle of a duel and then appearing out of nowhere can be a bit infuriating. Other than that, it is a great boss fight that improves over the original fight.

Isshin, The Sword Saint

Isshin, The Sword Saint is the final boss of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and is without a doubt the hardest boss fight in Sekiro. An argument can also be made about Isshin being the hardest boss that FromSoftware has ever created. Isshin has four phases, where the first phase requires players to fight Genichiro one last time. Isshin is extremely aggressive and fast. There is also a lot of variety in his movements that always demand a player’s attention.

Each of the phases of this boss fight is very well designed. The first phase is a classic sword duel, whereas, in the second phase, the boss also uses a Spear. Making Isshin way deadlier and quicker in this phase. Isshin also has a gun which he can shoot during his attacks. The final phase adds lightning to the mix, which, if a player is familiar with Lightning Reversal, makes this phase relatively easy. Overall it is a well-designed boss fight that demands that the player is well-versed with the game mechanic.

There is not any flaw about the boss fight except that maybe the boss fight can be a bit too difficult. Fighting Genichiro in the first phase over and over again if you die can also be a bit annoying but other than that it is a perfect boss fight and deserves nothing but praise.
