Lorcana: 3 Interesting cards for Ruby/Sapphire in Set 4

Since launching in August 2023, Lorcana has become a popular trading card game. Retailers and friendly local game stores could barely keep any Lorcana boxes or booster packs on the shelf when Set 1 was released. Luckily, since the release of set 3, retailers and friendly local game stores have been able to keep Lorcana products on the shelves.

Ruby/Sapphire Ramp is a Tier 1 deck in Lorcana’s meta right now and seeks to control the board until it can get its engine going. Aggressive decks are the main weakness of Ruby/Sapphire Ramp mainly due to it not having great early-game removal but set 4 Ursula’s Return looks to have some much-needed removal for Ruby/Sapphire’s early-game.

Control the early game with Brawl

Brawl is an upcoming Ruby card in Lorcana’s newest set that allows its controller to banish a chosen character with Strength 2 or less and costs 3 ink to do so. As someone who plays Ruby/Sapphire Ramp, I like this card a lot! It’s no Fatal Push like in Magic, but it’s still a very good early-removal card for a deck that desperately needs it.

It also has the benefit of being added to a player’s inkwell which can help them play their stuff on curve. In the mirror match, it hits cards like Hiram Flaversham, a key piece to the deck’s engine. It also hits Belle which is a more recent win condition to the Ruby/Sapphire Ramp decks.

Get around Ward with Be King Undisputed

Be King Undisputed is another Ruby card that I think will slot well into the deck. It forces your opponent to banish one of their characters which is similar to Diabolic Edict in MTGWhat’s really strong about the card though is that it gets around Ward which is an ability that stops opponents from being able to target specific characters with Ward, similar to Hexproof in MTG

The only real downside to Be King Undisputed is that it can’t be placed into its player’s inkwell directly but Fishbone Quill can circumvent that. While it does cost 4 ink to cast making it more of a mid-game card, it can be cast on turn 3 depending on if ramp was used on turn 2. I think it’s a solid removal card that I’d put 2-3 of in my deck.

Dig Deeper with Dig A Little Deeper

Dig A Little Deeper is a new Sapphire card in Ursula’s Return which reads quite similar to one of my favorite cards Dig Through Time in Magic: The Gathering. Similarly to Dig Through Time’s Delve ability, Dig A Little Deeper can be played with Sing Together 8 which frees up your inkwell to be used for other things.

I like this card a lot in Ruby/Sapphire Ramp. Tamatoa and Maleficent can each Sing it on their own or a couple other characters in the deck can Sing it. Alternatively, you could cast it earlier than turn 8 due ramping out ink. Control decks are all about being able to gain card advantage and being able to look 7 cards deep into your deck and pick the best 2 is strong.
