Recently, Nintendo initiated a lawsuit against the creators of Palworld for violating the Pokémon patent. So far, Pocketpair has completely denied any wrongdoing in creating Palworld, whereas Nintendo maintains that the indie developers are in the wrong. As the saga between Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Pocketpair continues, let’s examine a few characters from the controversial game and compare them to their Pokémon counterparts.
Palworld’s Grizzbolt
Grizzbolt is a Pal who’s element is electricity. He’s yellow with black lightning bolt-like markings on his fur. Grizzbolt is quite large and very aggressive; often, he will immediately attack the player when seen. With Grizzbolt, there are seven different skills that you can unlock depending on the level, each skill is a lightning related attack. The “Lightning Bolt” is the most powerful, unlocked at level 50, and has 150 power.
Pikachu, the Pokémon that Grizzbolt strongly resembles, is similar in many ways. Pikachu is a small but powerful Pokémon. While Ash’s Pikachu differs from the rest of the Pikachus, they’re still mighty Pokémon. They have electric abilities that they mainly store in their cheeks until it’s time for release.
Both Grizzbolt and Pikachu have lightning powers, and they resemble one another physically. They’re both yellow with black accents on their fur and have references to lightning bolts in their appearances. Pikachu’s tail is shaped like a lightning bolt, while Grizzbolt has black lightning bolt-shaped stripes. Grizzbolt is large, while Pikachu is a much smaller Pokémon.
Foxparks and Pengullet
Foxparks is a Pal who’s element is fire. It’s drawn to resemble a fox and is bright orange with flames coming out of its tail. Foxparks is a more shy Pal and, unlike Grizzbolt, will try to run away from you when you try to catch it. Its most potent skill is level 50, where you unlock “Fire Ball.” The Pokémon that most resembles Foxparks is Flareon, the evolved version of Eevee. Flareon also has fire capabilities and is orange in color. The two creatures are shaped similarly and resemble foxes. They have similar tails and are both shy-tempered.
Pengullet is a Pal who’s element is water and ice; they’re usually friendly towards you when approached. It’s small in size and can be found near water. Pengullet resembles a penguin and is blue with a white stomach and an orange beak. Its most potent skill is “Hydro Laser,” and all its skills are water or ice based. The Pokémon that Pengullet resembles most is Piplup. Also, a water creature, Piplup, also looks like a penguin. It’s a prideful Pokémon that isn’t easily won over, which makes it harder to train.
Conclusion
As we watch this monumental lawsuit with anticipation, it’s interesting to see the similarities that Nintendo saw that prompted it. While it seems like the lawsuit is more based on game mechanics than the similarity of the characters, Palworld is close to Pokémon in both ways. It’s important to note that while there are a lot of similarities, there are also significant differences between Pals and Pokémon. Looking at the entire picture is paramount as we wait for more updates from the lawsuit.
