7 Days to Die Exits Terrifying 10-Year Early Access Period

The popular survival game 7 Days to Die is finally out of early access. Originally released all the way back in 2013, it brought many people into the genre. Some of those people still play today, staying loyal to the game set in a zombie apocalypse. Now that Version 1.0 is here, a wave of new players might flock to the game, especially since it’s on the New & Trending list on Steam. How has the game stayed so popular while being in early access for nearly 11 years? Well, that explanation is right here in this article.

The Story of 7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die (7DTD) is developed by The Fun Pimps, a company founded in 2012 by Richard Huenink. According to the company’s website, which seemingly hasn’t been updated in years, the goal of the game was to create a hardcore zombie survival game with tower defense aspects and a fully destroyable world. Those with The Fun Pimps succeeded in that goal and created a game that has now sold over 18 million copies across all available platforms.

7DTD is set after the fictional World War III in Navezgane, Arizona, one of the only bastions for humans left. Players take on the role of survivors just trying to live in a now zombie-infested world. The origin of the virus that created those zombies is still misty at this point. In any case, people infected with the virus die in seven days and proceed to get reanimated into bloodthirsty members of the undead. Players are forced to craft, loot, and create defendable structures if they don’t want to succumb to the zombies or the potentially not-so-friendly other players who may inhabit the post-apocalyptic world with them.

The Evolution of the Game

Throughout the nearly 11 years the game was in early access, it saw over 100 patches and updates. They featured many bug fixes, quality-of-life changes, new items, new mechanics, biomes, etc. The game has seen so many updates that the current version may seem like a completely different game than it was on release. This can especially be seen when comparing the graphics since the game looks leagues better than it did nearly 11 years ago.

In the early days of 7DTD, the game was similar to Minecraft in some ways. The building and crafting systems were very reminiscent of the much more family-friendly game. However, with all the updates, those mechanics have been overhauled to help give the game a more unique identity of its own. With how popular the game has gotten since the beginning days, it’s hard to believe that it originally didn’t have a multiplayer mode until Alpha 2 was released. Now, it’s still one of the most popular multiplayer games of all time, especially within the survival genre.

The Impact of Version 1.0

Back in the present, the heavy impact of 7DTD still continues, especially since it is finally no longer in early access. At the time this article was written, the game had over 103 thousand people playing through Steam alone. According to Steam Charts, the current peak stands at around 124 thousand players. The game is seeing a massive spike in players thanks to the release of Version 1.0. On July 24, the day before the full release, the game saw a peak of about 56 thousand players. That is a jump of about 84 percent, which is an incredible thing for the game as well as everyone with The Fun Pimps.

The full release of 7 Days to Die is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s priced at $44.99 across all available platforms. To players both new and experienced, have fun experiencing the wild world the game brings while trying not to succumb to the the deadly virus that plagues it. However you do, know you are taking part in a game that was on the fringe for a long time working to survive in this industry.
