No one likes to see their favorite team eliminated, but only eight teams were able to advance through the Swiss Stage to face off for the championship title in the League of Legends Worlds Knockout Stage.
16 Teams Started Worlds
After the Worlds Play-In Stage, 16 teams made their way to the Swiss Stage. Early-stage play began on October 3 and continued through October 7. Spain’s MAD Lions Koi had done well in the Play-In Stage, but they and Brazil’s paiN Gaming were the first to be eliminated after losing three straight rounds.
By the end of the Swiss Stage, six more teams would find themselves ousted. This included Fnatic, GAM Esports, and PSG Talon who all went 3-1. Dplus, G2 Esports, and Team Liquid made it to the fifth round and ended Worlds with a 3-2 record.
Two Teams Undefeated
Only two teams made it through the Swiss Stages without suffering a match loss. Gen.G Esports went 3-0 in match play, defeating Weibo Gaming, Top Esports, and Hanwha Life Esports in successive rounds. Hanwha Life Esports did manage to win a single game in the third round best of three matches, but couldn’t stop GenG. Esports from advancing to the next Worlds stage.
LNG Esports was the truly undefeatable team of the Swiss Stage as they went 3-0 in match play and did not lose even a single game in three rounds. They defeated Team Liquid, Bilibili Gaming, and Dplus in consecutive rounds.
A Trio of 3-1 Teams
Worlds will test teams, showing who can fight back from adversity. Three teams showed that even after suffering a loss, they were ready to fight for the crown. Hanwha Life Esports, T1, and Top Esports all escaped the Swiss Stage with 3-1 match records.
Hanwha Life Esports had the most game wins, racking up a 5-3 record with wins over PSG Talon, G2 Esports and FlyQuest. T1 and Top Esports both had 4-1 game records. T1 scored wins over paiN Gaming, BiliBili Gaming, and G2 Esports. Top Esports was victorious over T1, Fnatic, and Dplus. T1 and Top Esports are set to face off again in the Knockout Stage.
The Remaining Teams
A second trio of teams managed to avoid elimination from Worlds and score the three wins required to advance while suffering two defeats in match play. The 3-2 teams were Bilibili Gaming, FlyQuest, and Weibo Gaming.
Bilibili Gaming’s wins came over MAD Lions Koi, PSG Talon and G2 Gaming. FlyQuest was able to defeat GAM Esports, PSG Talon, and Team Liquid. Weibo Gaming’s Worlds wins came against Team Liquid, Fnatic, and Dplus.
Knockout Stage Awaits
The Knockout Stage quarterfinals began on October 17 and will continue until October 20. In the match held on October 17, Weibo Gaming staged a massive upset and eliminated LNG Esports, winning 3-1 in the best-of-five match.
Next up, Hanwha Life Esports will face Bilibili Gaming on October 18, followed by Top Esports versus T1 on October 19. The quarterfinals conclude on October 20 when GenG. Esports squares off against Flyquest.
