Nintendo has finally made a massive announcement regarding the Switch 2. With speculation rampant about when the next console is supposed to come out, the company sought to quiet the noise by revealing what they had planned. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly great news for those who are anxiously awaiting a new platform.
The Switch 2 is supposed to be a new and improved version of the existing console rather than a dramatic shift, as Nintendo has often done in the past. That is part of all the speculation, and eventually, Nintendo will confirm or deny everything everyone thinks they know about their next console. Here’s what we know.

Before this announcement, the Switch’s successor was just a leak. Of course, everyone knew that Nintendo wasn’t going to let the Switch be its final console, as it’s very likely that this is far from the end of the line for them. Still, a Switch 2 was just a leak until Furukawa, President of Nintendo, confirmed in a statement released on their X page.
He said on X, “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.” Furukawa is essentially asking everyone to exhibit some patience, because it’s still going to be a while. The fiscal year ends in March of 2025, which means there’s a little under a year left for the announcement to take place.
The president also noted that they plan on holding a software Nintendo Direct in June of 2024, but that fans should know that there will be no talk of the upcoming console. That does pose another interesting question. If Nintendo isn’t talking about the Switch 2, what software could be coming? It’s unlikely that the current Nintendo Switch is going to get an influx of new first-party games from big IPs so near to the end of its life cycle, which is clearly upon us.
Switch 2 not coming any time soon

Sadly, this is a bit of disappointing news. The Nintendo Switch game lineup is currently lackluster at best. Last July, Pikmin 4 was released. Since then, just three major first-party titles have been released and there is not much aside from remakes planned for the next long while. The fact that the Switch 2 won’t even be announced for possibly 10 more months doesn’t bode well.
Those looking forward to a new 3D Mario title or the next epic The Legend of Zelda entry will have to wait a long time it seems. Those will presumably be held for and possibly tied to the launch of the next Switch. The only major Nintendo game with any sort of release date is Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which is loosely slated for a 2025 release. Otherwise, no one knows anything about any new games planned for the future.
The Switch 2 is still a good way away, so everyone should pump their brakes. The current console is going on seven years old, but Nintendo consoles always have long shelf lives. Fortunately, there’s real information and a bit of a timetable for fans who so patiently await anything Nintendo does, like myself. It’s well into the future, but now we know roughly how far.
