Wes Ball is set to direct the Zelda movie in the near future. The film is currently not in production, but the director and some of the crew have already been named. Ball, who directed the newest Apes movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, as well as the three Maze Runner films, is leading the project. Nintendo will be heavily involved, just like they were with the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The Zelda movie will be an important one to get right. They’re setting it in live action, which adds some pressure to nail the fantastical world of Hyrule. And with such a long-running franchise with tons of critical acclaim as well as a devoted fanbase, it’s important to get it all right. That includes the game(s) Ball might draw from. But in typical pre-production fashion, he’s not saying anything – not even his favorite of the games.
Zelda Movie Director Won’t Reveal Favorite Title

On the red carpet of his current film, IGN asked what his favorite Zelda game was. The man tasked with bringing the franchise to the screen for the first time since 1989’s opinion on this matter is important, but he is staying silent. Wes Ball avoided the question, saying, “I better not say.” He seemed to ponder the question for a while, debating with himself on how it might go if he did reveal his favorite.
He responded to the post of his response with, “Relax guys. I’m one of you. I’ve just learned from a wise man, when it comes to Zelda, best to say nothing as things just get misinterpreted. Judging on these comments, that’s probably going to happen no matter what. Sheesh.” It’s probably wise not to say anything since a script hasn’t even been penned yet.
What Zelda Game Could the Movie Follow?
The Zelda movie could follow any number of games. There are 20 mainline games, and they all have pretty interesting stories. Each one could theoretically be the basis of a film script and could make for a very solid big-screen adventure. If that’s the direction they want to go, then there are quite a few classic and beloved options they could base the film on.
Given the live-action style, there are some limits. Games that feature time travel are probably out of the question. Ocarina of Time is loved by many and critically acclaimed as one of the best games of all time, but having a Link actor and then another, older Link actor probably isn’t in the cards. Furthermore, they have stated they want it to be a serious movie, so Link’s Awakening and Wind Waker (as well as its direct sequels in the same style) are out.
Recency bias might prompt them to adapt Tears of the Kingdom, but there would be challenges in bringing the dragons to life in live action. The final battle between the Light Dragon, Demon Dragon, and Link would be particularly challenging to shoot. That still leaves plenty of options for the Zelda movie, but with all the different hardships each one would bring, basing it off of one single game is unlikely.
Instead, they will probably do what they did with the Super Mario Bros. Movie. There are even more Mario games to draw from, but the studios decided not to do that and to instead use the characters and worlds of the franchise in conjunction with an original story. Look for them to do the same with the Zelda movie and introduce story beats and moments from all the games.
