The Great Revival of Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077’s comeback has been truly astonishing in the gaming world. The release of the bug-ridden game in late 2020 was universally panned by gamers and critics. However, it has now reached a potentially greater height than the game that elevated it to the top of the heap: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cyberpunk 2077’s revival can be attributed to several factors. But at its core, it comes down to the worldview of the developer. 

From Zero to Hero

CD Projekt Red. The Polish game developer had built a reputation for putting the needs of gamers, instead of short-term profits, first. It had a reputation that was shaken, not only by the release of what was essentially an incomplete, poorly optimized game, but by the media and PR stunts that accompanied it. Most notable are the restrictions on gameplay footage for those chosen for early access.

Those dark days, following the launch, and ruthless fan backlash, are well behind us. Following the release of its Phantom Liberty expansion pack and a slew of other updates, Cyberpunk 2077 has regained its position as a truly great game of this generation.

Cyberpunk 2077: The Comeback Kid

Comebacks are an increasing feature in the world of modern game development. It is one thing for a game that was poorly received to be superseded by a better future release in the way of a sequel or prequel, but for the game developer to keep working on the released product to raise its overall quality and playability to meet gamer expectations is increasingly the norm in the world of post-release patches and updates and the increasingly digital character of video games.

AAA games from Battlefront II, No Man’s Sky, and even the buggy Fallout 76 have seen steady improvement in playability and, along with it, fan satisfaction. Made possibly by game developers continuing to invest resources and developer man-hours to improve the game. The question is: what is different about Cyberpunk 2077?

The first thing that stands out about Cyberpunk 2077 is that it is not a live service game. It does not feature any pay to win, or even pay to enhance the gaming experience, as some of the other games mentioned already. Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion pack Phantom Liberty are single-player games through and through.

Thus, the additional monetization potential for these games is low to non-existent. So the value proposition lies in the gamers recognizing the value and making a purchase. CD Projekt Red, however, wanted to go that extra mile. The question is will CDPR do even more, like enabling modding capabilities to Cyberpunk 2077 as it did with The Witcher 3

By the time the Edgerunners update hit in early September 2022 (almost two years after the game’s first release) the first-person shooter game had attained a degree of stability and playability that the game’s and the developer’s social profile had markedly improved. But CDPR as the developer is known, was not content with that. It wanted to go that extra two—no—TEN miles to not just please its now sizable player base, but to earn their trust and sustain it for the long haul.

As one of the most reputable game developers in the Industry, CDPR understands that the reputation of the company is firmly tied to player loyalty, not only increasing value for shareholders. Thus the consistent improvements it has delivered to gameplay and added content have proved just that. Now as the sun is setting on Cyberpunk 2077, all eyes are on what CDPR has in store with its Witcher 4 (Polairs) and Cyberpunk 2 releases.
