The launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 seems so far away from our current May calendar that it barely seems worth talking about. However, when you are dealing with one of the top-played games across the entire world of video games, the discourse never truly ends. Whether we are talking about Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch date or the most recent update the GTA 5, there is almost always something to discuss regarding Rockstar Games entertainment masterpieces.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to set the bar for the next generation of games. GTA 5 was revolutionary in 2013 when the game reached the market. The fact that the game is still receiving after launch is solid proof that updates a decade the game’s iconic status in the eyes of both the publisher and gamers.
Grand Theft Auto Titles Embraced By Gamers

Grand Theft Auto 6, launching in 2025, should represent a landmark moment in gaming based on the success of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5. GTA 5 sold more than 200 million copies of the game in the 10+ years that it has been available for gamers to explore. According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the franchise is still reaching new gamers in 2024:
“We’re thrilled that more than a decade after their initial release, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online grew their audience size by an incredible 35 percent and 23 percent, respectively, for the full year”.
That is a pretty incredible year-over-year improvement in a marketplace flush with ever-increasing titles for gamers to choose from. Even more impressive with the title being a game that people have played for a countless number of hours over the years.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Expected To Reach Market “Holiday 2025”

The official date for Grand Theft Auto 6 will be revealed at a later date. In perhaps the most predictable of launch windows, Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games will be looking to capitalize on the most lucrative window for video game releases in the “holiday 2025” timeframe.
I spent several years as Store Manager of a New Jersey-based GameStop store during the madhouse of the Call of Duty game launches in the 2010s. I’ve had to call the police during one of them. Another story for another day.
But I can say with personal authority, that the brick-and-mortar videogame stores like GameStop spent most of their year planning around the profits they expect to see from new game launches in the fiscal fourth quarter between October and December.
With a project as ambitious as Grand Theft Auto 6 seems to be, it would not be at all surprising to see the game slip into 2026 to get some finishing touches if the designers do not feel the game is ready for the market by the end of 2025. A misstep during the debut of the game could be disastrous for the legendary gaming franchise.
So, What Do We Actually Know About GTA 6?
We don’t know a whole lot about Grand Theft Auto 6 yet. We know Take-Two Interactive & Rockstar Games is working on it despite some announced layoffs at the beginning of the month. The graphics look stunning based on the limited screenshot images that have been released and the game’s exclusivity to the next-generation of gaming console like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X & Series S.
Officially, we know this from the Rockstar Games website which features the first launch trailer and the following text:
Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet. Coming 2025 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series XIS.
We know there will be more details released about Grand Theft Auto 6 over the next two years before the game reaches gamers.
