I’ve seen a lot of strange advertisement crossovers with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy. The most famous Final Fantasy advertisement is FF15’s Gladiolus’ obsession with Nissin Cup Noodles and an entire edit of the original FF15 ad where certain assets are replaced with forks, spoons, ingredients, and a Nissin Cup.
Their latest advertisement with FF14 Online is with Mountain Dew, a soda heavily referred to as gamer fuel. They have added a player incentive to collect MTN DEW codes from their bottle caps to redeem an in-game mount called Mountain Zu and other prizes. Here’s what you should know about FF14’s Mountain Dew crossover.
Mountain Dew Gaming x FF14 Online Celebrates Dawntrail
After FF14 Online’s announcement at the 2023 Game Awards, Square Enix announced this past March that its fifth expansion, Dawntrail will be released on July 2nd, 2024. To celebrate, the company has teamed up with Mountain Dew. It sounds like a meme that shouldn’t have existed but knowing Square Enix’s history of advertisement crossovers is not far-fetched.
This event is currently available to FF14 Online players in the United States. It will run from May 16th, 2024 to January 5th, 2025.
What the Hell is the Mountain Zu?
On MTN DEW Gaming’s website, this monster is specially designed for FF14 and Mountain Dew crossover promotion. It’s described to be:
“This subspecies of the monstrous zu is known to inhabit mountainous regions of the Near East. Seeking to tame this ill-tempered bird, Hannish alchemists fed it a specially concocted brew, […] causing the creature to give off a citrus aroma.”
FF14 Online YouTuber, Pyra Sydannia believed this concocted brew could be Mountain Dew Baja Blast. The Mountain Zu does have feathers and eyes resembling Baja Blast aqua green colors.
How to Participate in Mountain Dew x FF14 Event
For players to participate in the Mountain Dew x FF14 Event, you will need to register on the MTN DEW Gaming website. Then you want to scroll down to the bottom of MTN DEW Gaming’s homepage to see which of their bottled products are part of this promotion. Each will have a code under their bottle caps to enter on their website to earn DEW points.
The highest points you can gather for each code is 200 DEW points from four of these bottled Mountain Dew sodas; Purple Thunder, Maui Burst, Overdrive, and Frostbite. The rest are worth 100 DEW points from Mountain Dew Original, Diet Original, Zero Sugar Original, Code Red, Voltage, Major Melon, Spark, and Livewire. If you are unsure if any of these products are in your area, Mountain Dew has provided a product locator on their webpage.
Another way to gather codes is by participating in boss raid battles with Mountain Dew’s FF14 representative, Big Sippin’. Every Friday at 1PM ET on the Hyperion server, Big Sippin’ will appear in-game for a chance to give out Mountain Dew codes for DEW rewards.
Mountain Dew’s FF14 Merch and In-Game Rewards
When you gather enough points for rewards, go to Mountain Dew Gaming Marketplace. Square Enix went out of their way to provide exclusive merchandise and in-game items. This lineup has an insane amount of collaboration and products.
From their fashion line, they have teamed up with athletic wear provider, Puma. The clothing includes two gaming hoodies, two T-shirts, and two sweatpants with Final Fantasy designs. My favorite has to be the FF14 x Puma Icon Tee with this gorgeous Final Fantasy monster design streak across the chest.
There’s a tote bag with Moutain Dew’s motto, “Do the Dew”, with moogles flying around it with the O in Do as Ifrit’s Hellfire. The tech prizes are a great selection with Mountain Dew and FF14 collaborating with Drop on customizable keyboards and Elgato for gaming microphones and stream deck studio controllers.
Taito has provided FF14 figurines, exclusive drinking cups, and plushies. These prizes are in limited supply as the Alphinaud Minion figure and the Major General drinking cup are sold out. Amazingly, Square Enix convinced Taito to provide these products that would be held exclusively in Japan’s crane games as prizes.
For anyone who wants to get the Mountain Zu but doesn’t have FF14 Online’s base game, you are in luck. If you gather 2,000 DEW points, you can redeem a copy of FF14 Online’s Starter Edition during this promotion. Starter Edition includes the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions.
The in-game rewards offer dyes in three of Mountain Dew’s soda colors (Original Green, Livewire Orange, and Voltage Blue), a sparkling citrus refreshment (a Mountain Dew potion), and the behemoth, Mountain Zu. Surprisingly, they are cheap to purchase including the Mountain Zu mount worth 600 points.
One of Square Enix’s Best Meme-Worthy Events
This is the most insane yet one of the most brilliant collaborations I have seen Square Enix has done. Mountain Dew has given FF14 Online’s community the option to go and purchase their bottled products, or participate in battle raids with Big Sippin’ to get Mountain Dew codes for their rewards.
The rewards themselves are high-quality physical prizes and in-game rewards have a fair price on them. The interaction with the FF14 community and MTN DEW Gaming members has shown the crossover provided plenty of fun. Last but not least, MTN DEW gaming extended the event from July 14th to January 5th of next year to prevent players from buying their bottled products in bulk in a short amount of time.
