Hypercharge: Unboxed Sees Great Success After Releasing on Xbox

The action figure shooting game known as Hypercharge: Unboxed is experiencing a great amount of success after it recently launched on Xbox One and Series X/S. It features a fun twist on the first-person shooter genre by making your character and the enemies you’ll face come straight out of the toy aisle. You get to customize your own action figure and battle against toys that may resemble some that you may have played with in days gone by.

While the game still needs improvements and updates to keep the energy going, I still found it an enjoyable and nostalgic experience when I sat down to play it. I am now pleased to bring you the story of how this game came to be so successful and why it stands out from other shooters.

The Dedication Behind Hypercharge: Unboxed

Hypercharge

Hypercharge: Unboxed is brought to us by an indie team of six people called Digital Cybercherries. The game was originally released on Steam all the way back in April 2020. Since then, the developers have been working hard to improve the game and add more content for everyone to enjoy. That hard work has clearly paid off since it can now be played by Xbox users. In fact, the game managed to reach over 50,000 sold copies in just 6 days after launching on Xbox consoles. That number continues to grow.

Also in that time, the game received over 600 views and earned a rating of 4.6 out of 5. One of the devs took to X to share a heartwarming and tear-filled message for all those who helped get the unique FPS game to where it is. He called it a dream come true, and I believe that is the best way to describe it. As someone who has played the game, it’s clear that a lot of love and care was and continues to be put into this project.

Playing with Toys in Style

Speaking of my experience in the game, I want to dedicate a portion of this article to reviewing the game. For reference, I haven’t been playing on Xbox, and I’ve only played the solo campaign since that’s what I prefer. However, there have been many reports from players about multiplayer servers not behaving the best in their current state. Since I haven’t experienced those, I won’t be going in-depth with them.

What I can say about my single-player experience is that I found it to be incredibly fun. The story, which I won’t dive too deeply into to avoid spoilers, drew me in almost immediately. This is mainly due to it being told through comic book panels and some well voice-acted narration. I also appreciate the building mechanics present in this game since it reminded me of classic tower defense games like Dungeon Defenders.

Of course, my favorite part of Hypercharge: Unboxed has to be the types of plastic and rubber foes you get to discover and battle against. I think my favorite ones are some of the earliest encounters. As someone who was an avid collector of Beyblades, seeing a colorful metal spinning top hurling towards me oddly put a smile on my face. This goes the same for every map this game has to offer since they have their own charms that fit right in with the game. If you want to feel a slice of nostalgia while shooting bad guys, I highly recommend picking up this title.
