Marvel VS Capcom 4 Needs to Happen Now

Marvel VS Capcom

Fighting games are a mainstay in the video game landscape. Whether it’s Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Marvel VS Capcom, Tekken, or any of the thousands of fighters out there, there’s no limit to the variety in beating the tar out of people. In a video game, of course. Capcom is known for making some of the most popular fighting games ever. Look at Street Fighter, arguably one of the most recognizable video games ever.

When I think of Capcom fighters though, my mind immediately goes to the Marvel VS Capcom series. This crossover series started in the 1990s as a humble crossover between X-Men and Street Fighter characters, and evolved into a company-wide collaboration. These games are adored by their fans, but lately, we haven’t gotten a new entry since 2017, and while the future of the series looks bleak, a new entry would be just what the fans have literally dreamed for.

Marvel VS Capcom is a Celebration

Firstly, these games are a celebration. In every single one of these games (except Infinite but we don’t talk about that one), you can tell the amount of love and dedication the developers put into them. It’s really all about the small things. The references to characters from the source material such as the comics. Characters like Spider-Man, one of the most popular fictional characters ever, have countless poses and moves taken right from the comics.

Even more impressive, is the original stuff. These games add some unique moves and special abilities to characters to give them unique moves that are only seen in these games. Again, look at any of the Marvel characters. These guys have powers in the comics, but in these games, they’re elevated to even more fantastical levels. You can tell the developers love and respect the characters and want them to be as cool as possible.

Marvel VS Capcom has a Loyal, Die-Hard Fan Base

It must be said how die-hard and loyal the Marvel VS Capcom fanbase is. These guys are the epitome of “get what you get and don’t get upset”. When MVC2 came out in 2000, that was the last Marvel game they got until 2011. Tournament organizers and die-hard fighting game community players stuck to this game like butter on toast. Not only did they love it, but it was all they had. Go to YouTube, and look up all the iconic MVC2 moments, there are too many to count.

Again, in 2011 when the third installment was released, the same thing happened. MVC3 came out and for six years straight, it was played at events like EVO, Combo Breaker, Frosty Faustings, and many more just to name a few. These games only come out once in a blue moon, so when they are released, fans sit down and play it until their knuckles bleed.

Marvel VS Capcom Hasn’t Had a New Game in Almost a Decade

In the current year, we haven’t gotten a new Marvel VS Capcom game in 7 years and counting. To add insult to injury, Marvel VS Capcom Infinite, the latest release, was very disappointing. Fans have been clamoring for a new one for years. There are countless online videos of content creators making wish list-type videos, asking for characters to be included. MVC4 is something that has been rumored many times, and many people have gotten and lost hope for it.

If anything, the fanbase has never been more united. Channels like Tampa Never Sleeps on YouTube hold weekly tournaments for Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, and the game is alive and kicking. It gets many players at bigger tournaments, and it even recently appeared at EVO last year, the biggest fighting game event of the year. The chances of an MVC4 happening are slim, but if any game series deserves a second chance, it’s this one!
