The new Fable game is one of the most talked about games from the Xbox Showcase this year. It’s also known as Fable 4 despite not being the official name on the title cards. Slated to come out in 2025 on PC as well as Xbox Series X and S, it’s giving new and old fans of the beloved fantasy series a big reason to look forward to next year.
In a showcase full of previously announced titles and world premieres, Fable is one of them that stood out to me the most. Like with any other game I’m interested in playing, I took some time to discover all the known information about this upcoming title. Here’s what I found.
The Team Behind the New Fable Game
It’s the duo of Playground Games and Third Kind Games that’s bringing us this new Fable game. You may know Playground Games from its work on the well-known Forza Horizon racing games. Speaking of those games, Fable was made using a combination of the ForzaTech engine and Unreal Engine 4. While many studios are transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, its predecessor still makes beautiful games. Just by taking a look at the official trailer for Fable, this sentiment still holds true.
Moving on to Third Kind Games, it’s one of the largest independently owned game studios in the UK. It’s known for its work on the wildly successful Sea of Thieves and Hearthstone. The studio previously helped Playground with Forza Horizon 4. With a track record of helping with the production of the same amazing and popular titles, Third Kind seems like a great addition to the fantastical world of Fable.
The game is one of the many titles being released next year being published Xbox Game Studios. It joins the lines of much-anticipated titles like State of Decay 3, South of Midnight, and the Perfect Dark remake. Just like those titles, Fable will be on Game Pass on day one. However, we don’t know when the Fable release date truly is just yet. We do know the release window is sometime in 2025.
The Story So Far
While we don’t know too much about the game just yet, we do know that Fable serves as a reboot for this fantasy RPG series. However, it seems to follow a similar formula that its predecessors did. You will take the role of a hero who will gain either a positive or negative reputation based on the choices that you make. You will do so by traveling the lands of Albion, partaking in quests, and battling villains and monsters alike.
Albion itself is a land of wonder and magic that is similar to the fairy tale lands you may have read about as a kid. Some of you may still read about them because I know that I do. From the trailers themselves, we can see monstrous toads, giant tree creatures, beings that seem to be goblins, and more. A giant named Dave also makes an appearance in one of the trailers, and I hope he makes it into the final game.
Speaking of such a silly character, Fable does not stray away from its humorous roots. This is something fans of the series will take delight in since in those games, you can get up to some absurd and downright dastardly activities. While we don’t know just how evil one can be in this game, what we have seen definitely sets the tone for what this game will bring in 2025.
A Glance at Gameplay
Speaking of what we will be able to do in the new Fable game, it’s time to talk about the actual gameplay. Along with the story and choice-based consequences, we also got a glimpse of the gameplay in the latest trailer. While we didn’t see much of it, we do know that there will be a fair share of sword swinging, archery, and magic we’ll be able to use to take down your enemies, human or otherwise.
From what is shown in the trailers, the combat seems pretty smooth, especially when transitioning from using magic to archery. What is not known though is what sort of skill progression there will be or what sorts of builds players will be able to make. With the Fable release date being in 2025, there’s still plenty of time for us to get a sneak peak and possibly even more gameplay.
Final Thoughts About the New Fable Game
It’s safe for me to say that I am incredibly excited about this new Fable game. This is coming from someone who has not played the previous games, but I have played my fair share of fantasy and adventure RPGs. How beautiful this game looks and the silly nature it seems to have is the reason why it was one of my favorite parts of the Xbox Showcase this year. While I would like to see a bit more of the combat and perhaps even some footage of the playable character just walking around, I’m happy with what I have seen so far.
I am also happy that it’s releasing next year instead of 2026 even if 2025 is still months away. What could fill me with even joy though is seeing an actual Fable release date. While I do enjoy a bit of mystery, I’d like to know when I’ll need to start adjusting my gaming schedule considering all the amazing releases that will be arriving in the same year.
