Setzer is Cool and Stylish
Very surface level, I know, But visuals and design are incredibly important for characters, especially in a series like Final Fantasy. Setzer has that cool, detached vibe to him. He is a gambler, and he is also known for having one of the fastest airships in the Final Fantasy 6 world, dubbed the Blackjack. Setzer’s demeanor plays into his hobby. He’s a gambler, so of course he’s going to be suave and cool.
Also, visually he is very distinct. He has long silver hair, and a cool jacket, and his weapon of choice is so unique. He throws playing cards at the enemy. This plays into his whole vibe and aesthetic. And damn if Setzer doesn’t have a cool aesthetic. He’s so stylish and excited to take risks. It may seem very simple at first, but his love of making everything into a game with either a huge payout or a tremendous loss is so refreshing and a really cool unique character trait.
Setzer started the Slot Mechanic
I would say Setzer’s greatest legacy in the series he resides in would be his game mechanics. In Final Fantasy 6, every character has their own cool, unique gimmick. Terra has the form of an Esper she can transform into, Gau can learn beast-like skills from enemies, Edgar can use mechanical tools to fight enemies, and Sabin can perform powerful fighting attacks by using fighting game-like inputs.
Every character is unique. Setzer has a slot mechanic. The player can hit the “Slot” button, and depending on the outcome it will do different things. This is a mechanic that many characters would take after. In Final Fantasy 7, characters like Cait Sith took this and made it their own signature style. Whether it was with slots or rolling the dice. It’s a really cool mechanic that many FF characters would copy, because of how special and cool it is.
Setzer has Appeared in Kingdom Hearts
Any Final Fantasy character with a lot of popularity is bound to appear in other series. Setzer has made appearances in various spin-off Final Fantasy games. But the biggest game I’d argue he appeared in was the Kingdom Hearts series. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Setzer is the champion of the struggle battle in Twilight Town, one of the game’s main locations.
Setzer is even more memorable here due to his cocky attitude and mysterious aura. I really love how he’s the only Final Fantasy 6 character to appear in the series. It really goes to show how special he is. Setzer is just that. Special. He’s got a lot going for him, like a great design, memorable mechanics, and a lasting impression. He’s one of the most stylish and suave Final Fantasy characters, and his legacy lives on not just in the series, but in other franchises as well.
