Lara Croft is coming to Dead by Daylight! Eurogamer accidentally leaked the news before BHVR could confirm the news later on that same day. Dead by Daylight players can play as Lara Croft on the newest Play Test Build (PTB). While players may be accustomed to using guns and bows, now Lara must wield toolboxes, health kits, and flashlights to survive against the killers found in The Realm. What do we know about this character?
Who is Lara Croft?
Lara Croft is one of the most well-known faces in gaming. This year, the BAFTA gamer’s choice controversially voted her the most iconic video game character ever. She has appeared in Call of Duty, Fall Guys, Fortnite, and now Dead by Daylight. She is the main antagonist of the Tomb Raider series of video games. The version of Lara Croft used in the game is from the recent Survivor Trilogy. This is the younger Croft not known for being an adventurous British superstar. No, this version of Croft is just beginning her adventures. Now, she’s finding her way into the fog.
What Are Her Perks?
The first perk Lara Croft has is Finesse. This perk allows characters to speed vault 20% faster while healthy. The perk goes on cooldown for 40/35/30 seconds after performing a fast vault. It would have good synergy with Windows of Opportunity and Lithe. The second perk is Hardened. After unlocking a chest or blessing a totem, this one activates. If something would cause your character to scream, the aura of the Killer is revealed for up to five seconds instead. Boon perks would work well with Hardened.
The third perk is Specialist. Each time you open or rummage through a chest, gain 1 token. You can gain up to 3/3/3. When your character performs a great skill check on a generator, consume all tokens. Then for each token consumed, reduce the maximum required generator progress by two, three, four. This perk would do well with Plunderer, Residual Manifest, or Scavenger.
Is She Fit for the Fog?
Some have questioned whether or not Lara Croft would fit in The Realm of Dead by Daylight. After all, it is filled with the Horror Hall of Fame. Alan Wake is from a horror series of the same name. The Tomb Raider franchise is more known as an action platformer than a spooky game. But remember the Yaaxil. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, these creatures were introduced giving the series some horror elements. Who could forget the last level of the original Tomb Raider was Atlantis, an area where the walls were made of flesh?
The developers referred to her as “the embodiment of a survivor.” Lara Croft’s character was originally like Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. The later games marketed Croft as a survivor rather than an action archeologist. She has survived extreme weather, cave-ins, T-Rex attacks, mercenaries, and more. This fits in better with many of the survivors of Dead by Daylight. Meg Thomas faced the strain of caring for her mother and disappeared. Dwight Fairfield was abandoned in the woods by co-workers and disappeared. Feng was an alcoholic gamer.
Lara Croft fits in perfectly with the Dead by Daylight mythos. The Entity is an unknown eldritch horror that feeds off the emotions of others. The Trials only serve the purpose of allowing this being to feed off the hope, sorrow, fear, and joy of the various survivors and killers. What better person could The Entity choose than Lara Croft? While she is not a horror character, her games would have her experiencing emotional highs of all of the above depending on the situation.
While the fans of Dead by Daylight might be divided on whether Croft belongs, she’s coming regardless! If the reader is a PC player, Lara Croft can be played on the PTB. If one plays on a console, Lara should be available on July 16th.
