The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has gamers very excited. Everyone expected the Nintendo Direct to reveal an HD remake of either Wind Waker or Twilight Princess (though both have been given one HD remake before), not a brand-new game. What stunned those watching the live stream even more was the release date for this new title. It’s coming sooner than anyone would have expected. Here’s everything we know about it.
When Does The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Come Out?
The Legend of Zelda: EOW, as fans of the franchise are calling it, will be released on September 26. It was originally announced, with nary a leak or rumor beforehand, on June 18 at the Nintendo Direct. That leaves just over three months before players will be able to try the 30th mainline entry in the Zelda franchise. It’s one of the earliest major releases of the second half of the calendar year for Nintendo.
Pre-orders are available now. It is selling for $59.99, a drop back to “normal” pricing after The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was $69.99. Retailers like GameStop, Target, Best Buy, and more have pre-orders now and will likely have the game on their shelves the day it officially drops.
On the Nintendo eShop, it is eligible for a voucher, which means you can get it and one other approved game for $100. Those games include The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and so many more.
What’s TLOZ Echoes of Wisdom About?
TLOZ Echoes of Wisdom, another shortened spelling the community has come up with, will follow another epic adventure in Hyrule, but there’s one massive change. This time, it’s Link who has been captured/gone missing, and it’s up to Zelda to save him and Hyrule in the process. Eagle-eyed viewers noted that the trailer looks like it contains the A Link to the Past version of Hyrule in the Link’s Awakening style, so it could be connected to that game.
Very little is otherwise known about the plot. The premise is made clear: strange and mysterious rifts have popped up all over Hyrule, swallowing up people – including Link. Zelda narrowly escapes a rift in Hyrule castle and must avoid danger and explore the damaged lands. It appears as if the guards of Hyrule Castle have turned on her as well.
Princess Zelda ends up in a cell where she meets the fairy Tri, harkening back to old 3D Zelda games that gave Link a fairy companion. The fairy gives her the ability to make echoes, or copies, of virtually anything. She must use them to escape, explore, and survive as she uncovers the mystery of these rifts and where Link and others have gone. It is a return to top-down gaming, the original game genre that made The Legend of Zelda so famous.
This is the first time Zelda is playable as the main character. Instead of journeying through Hyrule as the fabled Hero Link, the roles are reversed and the gameplay is, too. It doesn’t look like Zelda even has a sword, so she’ll have to use her echoes to fight instead of engaging in close combat. That is another steep departure from the standard Zelda formula.
