Dead by Daylight found itself trending on X (Twitter) for the worst reason: The Trickster Bug. Players of Ji-Woon Hak, AKA The Trickster, can potentially trigger a bug while using his throwing blade power. Bugs in video games are nothing new. They can range from annoying to amusing. The recent Twisted Anniversary saw bugs that automatically killed survivors. This particular glitch found itself trending for a different reason. This bug ran the risk of causing seizures and potentially causing harm to players.
Trickster Bug Potentially Causing Seizures
The bug first appeared in May during the Public Test Beta. When The Trickster would hit players with a throwing blade, the survivor’s screen turned pink. Every hit of the blade afterward caused the survivor’s screen to flash. Although players notified BHVR of this bug, it somehow stayed in the game after the next update.
Again, players notified BHVR of the bug. A lone video was posted online to show the bug in action. Epilepsy warning: Do not watch if you have photosensitivity issues. The issue was not broached by Dead by Daylight until recently. Viewed as inaction by many in the Dead by Daylight community, the community took to Twitter and a recent Dead by Daylight AMA to address the Trickster bug.
What Has Dead by Daylight Said About This Bug?
On July 3rd, Dead by Daylight tweeted: “Our team has taken great care in attempts to identify the reported graphical issue with The Trickster and unfortunately was not able to find anything reproducible. Currently, the issue is not widespread. If you believe you can identify this issue, we urge you to contact player support: https://://dbd.game/SP”
Eric Pope, Community Manager, has taken to Twitter to reply to complaints. Replying to one commenter Pope tweeted: “If you are able to get support ticket numbers from them, I can have the support team ensure they are looked at. Feel free to DM those details to the dbd account. Unfortunately the reports we have so far are resharing the original video.”
While it’s a shame it has taken public outcry to spur BHVR to action, one can appreciate the effort Pope has put into reaching out to multiple sources in the hopes of getting answers to the Trickster bug. As long as they’re trying to fix it, not much else can be done.
How Have Players Responded?
One question remains in the minds of Dead by Daylight players. Why isn’t the killswitch feature being used? Streamer and Bubba enthusiast SpooknJukes wrote: “What is the point of having a killswitch feature if you won’t use it on a character with a bug that can cause people to have seizures?” Lexy tweeted: “It costs $0 to killswitch the trickster until you figure it out, bhvr.”
Killswitch renders a map, character, perk, or other usable item unusable until the problem is fixed. It’s commonplace in all types of games. Perks, maps, and killers have had problems and BHVR has not used the killswitch feature. Streamer moonlit_mads claims a friend was hospitalized after experiencing a seizure due to the Trickster bug.
Others have contradicted statements made by Pope. Dead by Daylight streamer Ashhlo tweeted: “For context, I’ve personally seen two videos be reported to BHVR. Which already disproves what he’s saying. Additionally, multiple other creators claim they’ve seen evidence and more reports as well. I know there is AT LEAST two.”
Some have taken to Twitter to warn players of the possible problem. NichiLune wrote: “Please avoid playing Trickster until the flashing lights bug is fixed. If you are prone to seizures etc. and face a trickster please DC!”
There is a bright spot to this story. Dead by Daylight players have been experimenting with various builds on Trickster in custom matches. This is done to minimize the risk of exposing someone photosensitive to the Trickster bug. These players may have narrowed the cause to one of two Trickster add-ons. Hopefully, this means the trouble will soon be over.
