Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Returns Mickey Mouse to the Spotlight

Epic Mickey

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is set to bring players back into the world of Mickey Mouse. 2010 saw the Wii-exclusive, Epic Mickey, try to shine a light back on the Disney mascot with a 2012 follow-up Epic Mickey: The Power of Two. Rebrushed is a remaster of the 2010 classic. There have been multiple occurrences where the Disney mascot has been a video game character, and this is arguably his most prominent. What do we know about this remaster?

Epic Mickey Painted the Mouse in a New Light

There was a time when Mickey Mouse was a household name. He was the star of countless cartoons, movies, books, and video games. By the early 2000s, he stopped being a character with life and depth. The mouse became more of an empty shell of his former glory. A soulless caricature of The Walt Disney Corporation’s brand. Mickey Mouse needed new life breathed into his 2D form, but how? Disney decided on a video game.

Mickey Mouse is drawn into his mirror after seeing Yen Sid working on a world to hold the lost and forgotten characters from Disney’s past. Mischievous as he is, Mickey tries using Sid’s magical brush to create a self-portrait but accidentally knocks over a vial of ink in the process. The Shadow Blot is created despite Mickey trying to clean up the mess. Mickey escaped, leaving the world a wasteland. He forgot the damage he created until decades later when the Shadow Blot captured the Mouse, bringing him to The Wasteland. Working with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mickey must defeat the Shadow Blot and fix the Wasteland he created.

How was Epic Mickey Received?

Reviewers praised the game’s story and premise. Warren Spector and the team at Junction Point worked to create a story that not only thrust the Disney mascot into the spotlight but also portrayed him as the hero he should have been. Mickey learns the dark secrets of the Wasteland. This is the abode of Disney’s long-forgotten characters. Led by Oswald, the realm is inhabited by the likes of Clarabelle the Cow, ghosts Gilbert and Ian, and a host of other lost cartoons.

The use of the morality system received a bit of praise as well. Mickey’s in-game decisions help decide the outcome of the game. He makes these choices by using either paint or thinner to repair or destroy the Wasteland. The soundtrack is one of the best parts of the game. Jim Dooley created music for the game which is both fantastical and ominous at the same time. Listen to “The Gremlin Village” to hear a creepy rendition of “It’s a Small World.” The graphics are somehow vibrant but grimy at the same time. Hopefully, the framerate issues the Wii presented will disappear with newer software.

The general complaints revolved around the control scheme. Epic Mickey was a Wii-exclusive title. The fickle Wiimote’s aiming ability sometimes worked as intended while other times were a struggle for players. The controls, specifically for 2D sections, are criticized as being way too precise in certain areas. Fighting enemies is a chore thanks to a camera that cannot properly track Mickey in combat.

What Changes are Being Made?

Warren Spector returns, teaming up with THQ Nordic, for Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. With any remaster of a game changes are made. What does the team have in store for Mickey and company?  The game’s lighting will be the first change players will notice. The first game was thought to be a bit too vibrant for its good. The team is working on making the Wasteland a little bit more shadowy to fit in with its darker theme. Hopefully, this change will darken the areas that need darkening while leaving other areas alone. Certain areas in the Wii game made it difficult for players to see bottomless pits. Countless Mickeys lost their lives thanks to such unforeseen pitfalls.

Another change deals with Mickey’s in-game abilities. While not much is known, Mickey will be given a new arsenal of attacks to fend off Shadow Blot’s minions. These moves would include a ground pound, a dash feature, and the ability to sprint. These changes surely help Mickey deal with enemies and the dangers of platforming. These new changes should keep Epic Mickey: Rebrushed from being a paint-by-the-numbers affair. It’s been ages since the world has seen Mickey Mouse as the hero he once was. This game should remind gamers of the magic once beheld in the Mouse.
