The Legend of Zelda Chess Set is a crossover board game. Chess, of course, is one of the oldest tabletop games there is. The Legend of Zelda, to its credit, is one of the oldest video game franchises that’s still running. Naturally, the two decided to become one a few years ago. Zelda games have a fantasy feel to them and there’s certainly a lot of nobility. They’re action-adventure games, but they are set in the fantastic world of Hyrule.
Those two aspects go hand-in-hand with chess, a game with medieval elements that require you to use your brain much more than other tabletop games. It’s like Zelda games in that sense, as the puzzles and dungeons require a lot more thinking than the average mindless video game. In fact, there may not be a tabletop and video game more suited to go together. Here’s what to know about The Legend of Zelda Chess Set.
Buying The Legend of Zelda Chess Set
The Legend of Zelda Chess Set is sadly not available first-hand right now. There is an Amazon page for it, but it’s out of stock. This is a third-party source, of course, but it is one of the most straightforward methods of acquisition. Unfortunately, players who are desperate to get their hands on it will need to be patient or look for alternative options. Fortunately, there are a few other ways of buying this board game from USAOpoly.
eBay is the primary method of buying the official version. Of course, this is where prices can easily be inflated. The Amazon option retails for about $75. The eBay versions range from $52 to $265 and have everything in between. This is once again third-party, but there are 47 results currently showing on the website, so eager chess players or Zelda fans have their chances. It just might cost them a few dollars (or rupees in Hyrule).
What is the Zelda Chess Set?
The Zelda Chess Set, fortunately, has nothing that an ordinary chess piece doesn’t have. It’s just chess with modeled figurines instead of the standard ones. The game is played the exact same way. However, each piece might not be familiar or immediately recognizable. Here’s what each one represents for the heroes:
- Navi (Pawns)
- Darunia (Rook)
- Epona (Knight)
- Impa (Bishop)
- Link (King)
- Zelda (Queen)
The villains’ side has a few different iconic characters present:
- Deku Scrub (Pawns)
- Armos (Rook)
- Phantom (Knight)
- Iron Knuckle (Bishop)
- Ganondorf (King)
- Twinrova (Queen)
There are characters from a wide variety of games featured: Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majora’s Mask, and more. The game was developed in 2016, which was before Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, as well as any future entries, so those are not represented here. Still, it’s a set full of iconic characters to give a fun twist to a classic board game. There are custom sets on Etsy, but the USAOpoly The Legend of Zelda Chess Set is the only officially licensed chess set.
Zelda Monopoly and Other Board Games
The Zelda chess set is not the only time Hyrule has invaded tabletop gaming. There is also a Zelda Monopoly for the franchise, too. It features Hyrule Castle, the Temple of Time, Clock Town, Twilight Realm, Zora’s Domain, Lorule Castle, Minish Village, and so many other iconic locales from the series. Zelda Monopoly is $100 right now. There is also a UNO card game that has Zelda characters on the cards as well. You can also buy this puzzle that is for the Tri-Force of Zelda fame akin to a Rubik’s Cube.
There are also some puzzles featuring The Legend of Zelda available for purchase as well. Of course, these are slightly different from board games, but they are another way to experience Hyrule on your table instead of your television screen. There’s no end to how you can experience The Legend of Zelda with video games, board games like The Legend of Zelda chess set, and even a movie on the way!
