If you’re looking for a character in Super Smash Bros. that has a combination of good defense and decent offensive power, Zelda is a character you should explore. She’s often overlooked, but she’s a versatile powerhouse with a unique playstyle. Let’s explore why Zelda’s skill set and strategic flexibility make her a prime candidate for many players.
Mastering Zelda’s Moveset
Nayru’s Love (Neutral B)
This move creates a magical barrier that provides a protective shield against attacks. It can even reflect incoming projectiles. It’s especially useful for opponents with long-range moves and countering characters who rely on projectiles.
Din’s Fire (Side B)
This projectile can be charged to increase both its power and range. It’s great for when you need to control space and apply pressure to opponents. When used effectively, it can force opponents during the fight to intercept the projectile while recovering.
Phantom (Down B)
One of my favorite moves, Phantom summons a magical guardian that can block incoming attacks. Depending on your strategy, it can even be used to set up a trap. This move can cover a large area and make it difficult for opponents to recover.
Farore’s Wind (Up B)
Farore’s Wind is a powerful recovery option and can be great for surprise KOs. This move allows Zelda to teleport a considerable distance either vertically or horizontally. I mostly use it to recover when I’ve fallen off the stage but when done right it can be used to surprise opponents too.
Aerial Attacks
Zelda’s aerial attacks, particularly her forward aerial and back aerial are crucial for damage and prevent a recovering opponent from reaching the stage. The forward aerial delivers a powerful hit that has a wide range. That back aerial is excellent for securing kills off-stage due to its knock-back.
Smash Attacks
Zelda’s smash attacks are key for securing kills. Zelda’s forward smash has significant reach and power, her up smash is useful for catching opponents who are above, and her down smash provides a wide hitbox that covers both sides.
Countering Common Weaknesses
Zelda is a character that can struggle against characters that are faster and more aggressive. This is especially true for those characters who can close the gap quickly. To handle these types of characters, focus on using the moves, Nayru’s Love and Din’s Fire. These will help create space and prevent you from being overwhelmed. You can also use Phantom to control an opponent’s movement and disrupt their approach. It’s highly recommended that you position yourself strategically to avoid being cornered. Be sure to remember that you can use teleportation for quick escapes as this can be a huge help in any match.
Zelda’s mobility is often seen as a drawback in these games, but you can mitigate this by getting comfortable with Farore’s Wind. Use this move not just for recovery but also to surprise opponents with unexpected repositioning. Don’t be afraid to use the training mode to get more comfortable with Zelda, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this with a character I’ve wanted to main and seen significant improvement. Set a goal for yourself, it could be something as simple as getting a specific technique a certain number of times in a row.
The thing that you need to remember the most is that each match offers a chance to learn and adapt. Pay attention to how your opponent reacts to you and adjust your strategy. For instance, if your opponent shield grabs, try spacing your aerials better. You can even throw them off by double-jumping before landing.
Wrapping Up
Zelda’s unique blend of defensive and offensive abilities makes her a compelling choice. Her high skill ceiling and strategic versatility allow for both nuanced play and rewarding high-level strategies. Experiment with her moves, develop your strategies, and see how she can elevate your Super Smash Bros. experience. Give Zelda a try and unlock her capabilities in your next match.
