We find it fitting that we address this celebration of the iconic SNK character, Terry Bogard, with a list of things you might not have known about the deceptively friendly all-American street fighter. Why is there a celebration? Because it was just announced that Terry Bogard has officially entered the roster as a DLC character for Street Fighter 6.
Let’s just say we’re giddy as a Tiger Uppercut or Dragon Punch. But this isn’t just some cameo, not to mention it’s a rare occasion for a Street Fighter game to feature any fighter other than what’s in the tightly-knit universe. But the fact is Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury — while strictly SNK and not Capcom — has been around the gaming sphere quite a bit. More than you know.
1) The number of games featuring Terry Bogard
Ready to be blown away? It’s a staggering 80 titles since 1991. So it’s safe to say Terry Bogard isn’t just a staple of SNK’s Fatal Fury and related games; he’s a staple of fighting games in general. Period.
He was even featured in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. In fact… He was the only SNK character to be featured in the Nintendo title.
2) The number of votes Terry Bogard has
These days, coin crunchers and button smashers love to rate their characters — some love Chun Li, others love Joe Higashi, and some even love T.J. Combo over Balrog from the Final Fight Capcom series (or how about Scorpion and Sub-Zero?). We’ll often rate them. But Terry Bogard has an interesting set of votes or accolades to his name:
For one, Gamest’s 1997 Heroes Collection voted Terry as the staff’s eighth favorite fighting character. The Neo Geo Freak’s 1997 Volume 8 character poll had him slotted as the 15th favorite character with a total of 690 votes (270 from males, 420 from females).
When Garou: Mark of the Wolves was released, another poll was taken, seeing Terry Bogard ranked as the second most favorite character of all time. On Neo Geo Freak’s website, he was fourth with a total of 2,479 votes. Vigamus’s Museum of video games the municipality of Rome sponsors listed Terry as the “mascot of the early 90s era of Neo Geo titles.” And best of all…. A 2005 poll was taken at the SNK Playmore USA — Terry Bogard was ranked number one (10,014 votes).
3) His crossover friendship with another ‘blonde’
While all of that is impressive for just some everyday dude made of pixels and wild and crazy super MMA moves, none of that compares to the incredible crossover that already exists within these universes…. It’s a fact that Terry Bogard just so happens to be friends with none other than Ken Masters of the Street Fighter franchise.
Makes sense as to why Terry Bogard is now featured in the upcoming Street Fighter 6 edition. But that wasn’t Terry Bogard’s first foray into the haddokens and shoryukens of this universe. Aside from being in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Terry was also in the iconic Capcom Vs. SNK crossover game. In fact… That’s where the storyline had him be friends with 0ur favorite Shotokan blondie in the first place!
Game fighters far and wide, looking forward
Indeed, looking forward to the future! It’ll continue to be an interesting Capcom ride with Street Fighter 6 as we see Terry Bogard (and a couple of other surprises, too!) flex his fighting colors on that platform. Perhaps facing off against his old friend, Ken? Or maybe bicker with the other guy, Ryu, for Ken’s attention and affection? Oh, yes, it’s going to be fun.
Street Fighter 6 was announced back in February of 2022. It was released on Playstation 4 and 5 along with Windows and Xbox Series X/S on June 2, 2023. An arcade version entitled Street Fighter 6 Type Arcade is also available, published by Taito for Japanese arcade cabinets on December 14, 2023. And once again, we’ll reiterate: it will feature Terry Bogard as a playable DLC character very soon. You’re welcome.
(One additional fun fact: did you know Terry Bogard also has a pet monkey named Ukee?)
