Ghost of Yotei is a relaxing revenge story

Ghost of Yotei is Undoubtedly the PS5’s Most Relaxing Revenge Story

Ghost of Yotei has a unique vibe, compared to its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch’s newest blood-soaked revenge story offers moments of peace rather than urgency with Ghost of Tsushima.

The game came out on October 2, 2025 for the PlayStation 5 and will have a New Game Plus mode, a new tier of upgrades for existing armor sets and weapons and new settings for the game’s Photo mode. The update will come out on November 24, 2025.

What Makes Ghost of Yotei Stand Out?

Most open-world games are often huge worlds that feel empty, but Ghost of Yotei stands out through its straightforwardness and its ability to go with the flow. By taking inspiration from other open-world games like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim, while continuing to honor Japan’s history, Ghost of Yotei stands out from other open-world games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

As Atsu travels through Ezo, the game reveals a cast of characters going through many hardships: refugees fleeing unnecessary bloodshed and Ezo’s warriors suffering from identity crises. The Ainu, Japan’s indigenous tribe, give away trinkets and moments of calm amid the chaos in Ezo. In this game, the Ainu are displaced due to forced assimilation into Japanese culture and Japanese customs.

While Ghost of Tsushima’s visual appeal and primary storyline were heavily based on movies directed by Akira Kurosawa, Ghost of Yotei takes inspirations from not only Kurosawa but fellow film director Takashi Miike and Shinichirō Watanabe, the director behind iconic anime such as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

What Makes Atsu Different from Jin Sakai?

Since Atsu’s story is one of anger and revenge, she stands by her own rules and morals, unlike Jin Sakai’s conflict of doing the right thing against evil. Atsu, unlike Jin, can easily express herself through combat. Jin, however, had to fight enemies by using ninja-style techniques rather than the Samurai Code he grew up with.

What makes the game stand out among not only other open-world games but most games in general is Sucker Punch’s ability to contrast the setting with a static character different from what’s going on in the story. Static characters in fiction are characters who remain the same throughout the story.

Secondary characters are often static in nature, but there are few main characters who don’t fundamentally change by the end of the story. These characters include Captain America, Lulu from Final Fantasy X and Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia.
