S-Tier
These are the absolute best Grass-types available, boasting incredible stats, powerful Mega Evolutions, and the ability to dominate in their respective roles.
- Mega Venusaur: A defensive titan. Mega Venusaur’s Thick Fat ability halves the damage from its Fire and Ice weaknesses, making it incredibly difficult to take down. Its already great defensive stats are boosted, and it can function as a powerful special attacker or a stall-based wall.
- Mega Chesnaught: The Kalos starter becomes one of the best physical walls in the game upon Mega Evolving. Its Defense stat is immense, allowing it to shrug off physical hits with ease while dishing out powerful Fighting and Grass-type attacks.
- Mega Meganium & Mega Victreebel: This pair of new Megas brings fresh power to classic Pokémon. Mega Meganium gains fantastic bulk, making it an excellent supportive tank with access to moves like Leech Seed. Mega Victreebel becomes a potent mixed attacker, using its Grass/Poison typing to threaten a wide variety of opponents.
A-Tier
A-Tier Pokémon are exceptional choices that can easily form the backbone of a successful team. They are powerful, versatile, and just a step below the absolute dominance of the S-Tier.
- Venusaur & Chesnaught: Even in their base forms, these starters are top-tier. Venusaur’s Grass/Poison typing and balanced stats make it a versatile threat, while Chesnaught is a formidable defensive wall with great physical attack.
- Roserade: A fast special attacker and an excellent support Pokémon. With access to moves like Sleep Powder, Toxic Spikes, and powerful STAB attacks, Roserade can control the battlefield and deal significant damage.
- Mega Abomasnow: While its Grass/Ice typing gives it a crippling 4x weakness to Fire, Mega Abomasnow is a powerhouse. It is a slow but incredibly strong mixed attacker that can disrupt weather-based teams with its Snow Warning ability.
B-Tier
These Pokémon are solid and reliable performers. They might have a few flaws or be more specialized than higher-tiered options, but they are more than capable of pulling their weight in battle.
- Meganium & Victreebel: Good Pokémon in their own right, they are highly effective but truly shine when they Mega Evolve. They function well as bulky Grass-types and mixed attackers, respectively.
- Leafeon: This Eeveelution boasts a high Attack and Defense stat, making it a solid physical threat. Its pure Grass typing and limited movepool keep it from rising higher.
- Trevenant & Gourgeist: This pair of Grass/Ghost-types offers a unique and useful typing. Trevenant has a good Attack stat, while Gourgeist’s variable sizing allows it to function differently depending on its form, often as a bulky utility Pokémon.
C-Tier
C-Tier Pokémon are serviceable but are generally outclassed by the options above them. They can be useful in a playthrough but may struggle against the game’s tougher challenges.
- Abomasnow: Without its Mega Evolution, Abomasnow is very slow and has too many weaknesses to be a consistent threat, despite its good attacking stats.
- Gogoat: Possesses a high HP stat and a decent movepool, but its defenses are too low to make it an effective tank, and its offensive stats aren’t high enough to make it a primary attacker.
- Simisage, Roselia, Quilladin, & Ivysaur: These are either middle-stage evolutions or Pokémon with mediocre, unspecialized stats. They are stepping stones to more powerful forms.
D-Tier
This tier consists of first-stage Pokémon that are not viable for serious combat. Their main purpose is to be trained and evolved into their much more capable later forms.
- Bulbasaur, Chespin, & Chikorita: As unevolved starters, these Pokémon have great potential but need to evolve to become effective members of your team.
- Bellsprout, Skiddo, Budew, Snover, Pansage, Phantump, & Pumpkaboo: These are all first-stage Pokémon. While necessary for completing the Pokédex, they are far too weak for challenging battles and should be evolved as a priority.
