Worlds 2025: G2 Esports Reignited the Western Hope
In the year that G2 Esports had the lowest expectations, they qualified for the Bracket Stage. In 2023 and 2024, many expected them to be in the top eight at Worlds. But they faltered at the final hurdle. In 2025, they managed to overcome it, defeating FlyQuest in the process, and regained their throne as best of the West. Top Esports stopped them from going further at Worlds, beating G2 3-1.
Worlds 2025: G2 Esports Team Preview
BrokenBlade
Total Apex rating – 6.3 (6th among top laners, 22nd among players)
Champions Played
- Galio (2)
- K’Sante (2)
- Jax
- Ornn
- Poppy
- Rek’Sai
- Renekton
- Sion
Aside from the first game of the tournament, BrokenBlade had a respectable showing. He came into Worlds needing to prove that MSI was a one-off. He did that as he and Caps helped G2 to reach the Quarterfinals for the first time in five years. He led the way against BLG to move G2 to the qualification point in the Swiss Stage.
SkewMond
Total Apex rating – 5.8 (11th among junglers, tied 48th among players)
Champions Played
- Xin Zhao (4)
- Dr. Mundo (2)
- Ivern
- Maokai
- Poppy
- Trundle
SkewMond’s inconsistencies plagued him through the tournament. He had some games where he helped G2 win, while in others, he was invisible. His lack of presence in those games meant that G2 could never find a footing. He contributed to the jungle meta with his Dr. Mundo. His flash on the champion guaranteed G2’s trip to the Worlds Quarterfinals.
Caps
Total Apex rating – 6.2 (tied 9th among mid laners, tied 29th among players)
Champions Played
- Orianna (2)
- Anivia
- Aurora
- Azir
- LeBlanc
- Ryze
- Sylas
- Syndra
- Viktor
Caps had a game to forget in the series against FlyQuest. He got caught out on numerous occasions, preventing G2 from recovering. That was his one-off game for the tournament. He, like SkewMond, shaped part of the meta. He introduced Anivia, which both Chovy and Faker played in the Bracket Stage. It was his Shockwave finding FlyQuest to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Hans Sama
Total Apex rating – 5.8 (10th among bot laners, tied 48th among players)
Champions Played
- Caitlyn (2)
- Varus (2)
- Xayah (2)
- Corki
- Draven
- Lucian
- Yunara
Hans Sama started the tournament better than he ended. The series against Top Esports is one he is likely to forget soon. G2 decided to draft Corki. Hans Sama had barely played the champion throughout the year. He struggled to make an impact in that game. Even on his famous Draven, Hans could not reach the levels we saw from him during the year.
Labrov
Total Apex rating – 5.3 (10th among supports, tied 63rd among players)
Champions Played
- Bard (2)
- Rakan (2)
- Rell (2)
- Braum
- Neeko
- Thresh
Labrov was unable to make his mark on the international stage. His best game came against fellow LEC opposition, Movistar KOI. He managed to impact the map, something he was unable to do in most of the tournament. His Bard, especially, struggled to find value as we rarely saw him using his ultimate. Labrov has shown improvement during the year, but needs more time.
G2 Esports Team Review
Qualifying for the Worlds Bracket Stage is a step in the right direction. However, it comes with a caveat. They beat FLY and BLG, who both struggled at the tournament. Top Esports was the best opponent they could draw in the Quarterfinals, but they fell short of their goal. A runback with the same roster could deal damage on the international stage in 2026.
