Teamfight Tactics Set 16: Hero Augments Guide

Hero Augments are a staple of Teamfight Tactics. Since their introduction in Monsters Attack, every set has had them. Set 16 brings only a handful this time. There are four Hero Augments that players can pick. Two of them are Silver, the other two are gold. As we move into the new Teamfight Tactics set, we want to go over these Hero Augments and how to play them.

When to Play Hero Augments in Teamfight Tactics Set 16

With Riot’s focus on level eight and level nine boards in this set, you need the ideal situation to play Hero Augments. Obviously, you will not know all the augments and items you get on 2-1. If you have plenty of items early, especially from the component anvil portal, you can consider Hero Augments. If it is an economy-focused portal (Gold Subscription, Scuttle Puddle, or Loot Subscription), avoid Hero Augments. Having early copies of the unit and ideal items for them is another factor in your favor.

Teamfight Tactics: Artillery Barrage – Rumble Hero Augment

One of the more reliable Hero Augments to take. The guaranteed units from the Yordle trait and reroll allow you to hit 3-star Rumble easier. The one danger with Rumble is his reliance on items. Rumble needs at least one Guinsoo’s Rageblade and Archangel’s Staff. Often, players run two Guinsoo’s. That requires them to find three rods. Rumble also struggles in fast-paced fights, so you need tank items to keep your frontline alive for long periods.

Playing Rumble Hero Augment has no variance, as you are guaranteed to run vertical Yordle. The units, rerolls, and resources from Yordle Grab Bags make it ideal for Rumble.

Teamfight Tactics: Leap of Faith – Illaoi Hero Augment

The Illaoi Hero Augment has the benefit of playing around Bard and Bilgewater. Both aspects give additional resources. To optimise the comp, ensure you play Bilgewater early for the extra units. Always remember to reroll four times before the first carousel to unlock Bard. Ultimately, you want to play around six Bruisers and drop Bilgewater. Illaoi is less reliant on ideal items, but you want fighter items for her. Aside from the six Bruisers and Bard, you add flexible units. Aphelios can help if you do not have Sunder. You can play units like Yunara, Lissandra, Braum, Sett, Swain, or Mel to cap out the board.

Teamfight Tactics: The Ruined King – Viego Hero Augment

The Runied King grants you a 2-star Viego. It allows you to start building into Shadow Isles. You want to slam at least one item and a component early on Viego to get Yorick. Stacking souls is imperative to improving Viego’s ability and unlocking more Shadow Isles units. Picking the Hero Augment requires you to have good Viego items. He wants fighter items predominantly. Always try to run another Quickstriker to improve his potency.

As you unlock Shadow Isles units, continue to add them to your composition. Adding additional Wardens will grant frontline if you are missing that. Your core alongside the Shadow Isles units in the late-game is Loris, Seraphine, Fiddlesticks, and Kindred. You can also play around Mel and Noxus if you have the items/units for it.

Teamfight Tactics: Trials of Twilight – Xin Zhao/Zaahen Hero Augment

Trials of Twilight is the most flexible of the four, but it has strict requirements. You have to have early copies of Xin Zhao and ideal items to make this work. You want to winstreak as much as possible and hit 3-star Xin Zhao early. The more health you have, and the earlier you reach Zaahen, the better. Zaahen will only arrive after fielding 3-star Xin Zhao for five combats.

You can play around Ionia or Demacia as your core. Ionia is best if you have Path of Transcendence. Otherwise, play around with what you hit. Also, keep Omnivamp items to ensure that you unlock Aatrox later. If you play Demacia or Ionia, play the verticals and drop weaker units. You can add flexible units, based on your missing traits, to cap the board.
