GOG’s Co‑Founder Buys the Platform Outright For $25 million
CD Projekt co-founder Michał Kiciński purchased GOG, a leading video game and movie distribution service. The acquisition took place on December 29, 2025. Michał Kiciński also co-founded the distribution service. He purchased 100% of the shares, worth PLN 90.7 million (approximately $25 million).
In regards to the service’s founding principles, Kiciński said, “GOG stands for freedom, independence, and genuine control.”
In their blog post, the company said this, regarding their mission to preserve games both new and old:
“GOG has always been built on strong values and clear principles. When Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński first came up with the idea for GOG in 2007, the vision was simple: bring classic games back to players, and make sure that once you buy a game, it truly belongs to you, forever. In a market increasingly defined by mandatory clients and closed ecosystems, that philosophy feels more relevant than ever.
This new chapter is about doubling down on that vision. We want to do more to preserve the classics of the past, celebrate standout games of today, and help shape the classics of tomorrow, including new games with real retro spirit.”
GOG Answers Questions

The company explained that as a DRM-free service, the games players purchase on their site will still belong to them. They added that CD PROJEKT RED games will remain on the platform, in addition to games that will come out in the future. Those who donate to the service’s Preservation Program or become a Patron, which is a monthly donation towards the Preservation Program, will have no effect on the service’s acquisition. Funds put towards the Preservation Program will stay with the company.
In GOG’s section for Frequently Asked Questions, they explained Michał Kiciński’s goals for the service. Beginning with Kiciński’s desire to “preserve and grow the original philosophy” behind the service, they further explained Kiciński’s desires for the service:
“In a PC market that keeps moving toward mandatory clients and closed ecosystems, he believes GOG’s approach is more relevant than ever: no lock-in, no forced platforms, sense of ownership. His goal is to keep supporting both gamers and developers, and strengthen GOG’s mission: preserve the classics of the past, celebrate standout games of today, and help shape the classics of tomorrow.”
The company reiterated their mission to provide DRM-free games to players and stated that the company is not in financial trouble. Players’ libraries will remain unaffected by the acquisition, and players can still download offline installers. In their FAQ, the company said that any data stored on GOG will remain in control of the company and will not go to Michał Kiciński or other parties.
