The Rumored and Long-Awaited The Mortuary Assistant Film Just Dropped its First Trailer and It’s Better than I Expected
Back in 2022, DarkStone Digital and DreadXP graced players with one of the scariest horror games to come out in years, The Mortuary Assistant. You play as Rebecca Owens, a young woman who scored a job at a Mortuary working the night shift. The game was a surprise hit when it released, with the insane atmospheric horror you experience and every subtle jump scare that has made everyone crap their pants at least once. The first trailer for The Mortuary Assistant film dropped a few days ago, and here’s what fans are saying.

The long-awaited film adaptation of the wildly successful 2022 horror game, The Mortuary Assistant, is here, and production company Dread has finally dropped the first trailer of the film, which is set to release next month. The trailer definitely surprised many fans of the game, including myself, and not just because a film trailer dropped literally out of nowhere. It seems the film has taken some liberties in changing a few things from the game.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, the game follows Rebecca Owens as a mortician working the night shift at River Fields Mortuary. Nothing bad could happen, right? Well, it turns out that Rebecca is haunted by evil demons who want to possess her soul and roam free on the Earth, and as the mortuary assistant, it is our job to embalm bodies and banish a demon to hell every night that we work. It’s a daunting task that, unfortunately, Rebecca is stuck with alongside her boss, Raymond, who dragged her into this mess.
From the trailer, we can see there are slight differences between the game and the film, with the film being described as “a much more conventional tale of demonic invasion, where the mortuary part is almost irrelevant: It provides a ready supply of stiffs to grotesquely reanimate for various jump-scare shocks, but you’re not going to enjoy the pleasures of, say, hammering on someone’s gumline to ensure their mouth doesn’t suddenly pop open while mourners are bidding tearful farewells.”
What’s Changed and What Do Fans Think?

From the trailer, it seems that the writers and director of the film have changed a few things. The game is somewhat repetitive in terms of gameplay and your objective: embalm the bodies, find the possessed one, and banish it to hell. Simple. What makes the game so good and so scary are the countless scare animations you may encounter, and the types of endings you can get depending on your choices. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make such a good film.
The film has taken some liberties with the location of River Fields Mortuary, which doesn’t have that iconic, creepy, old building look to it, instead opting for a more traditional medical lab. Obviously, the film won’t have you replaying each night, embalming bodies, and it looks like everything will happen during the course of a single night of terror. Not much else is revealed from the trailer, but there are definite signs that point to some creative differences between the game and the film.
The Mortuary Assistant is a film adaptation of the 2022 hit game of the same name. For months now, fans of the horror game have been asking for a movie adaptation, and we’ve got our wish. What makes this adaptation special is how excited fans are to see this hope come to life, and though there were some creative liberties taken, it won’t deter fans from seeing the film. The Mortuary Assistant will release on February 13 in theaters everywhere.
