After a full year of waiting, Final Fantasy 16 is coming to PC platforms very soon. On September 17th, gamers can play what may be the graphically definitive version of the latest mainline Final Fantasy game. The developers also further discussed the topic of more timely PC releases as this date was made known. There’s much to discuss and look forward to, so read on for the important details.
Full-Steam to PCs Everywhere
When Final Fantasy 16 launches for PC on September 17th, fans will be able to buy it on the Steam platform. This is an interesting detail, as several of Square-Enix’s PC ports have launched first on Epic Games Store in recent years. It is interesting to see this release will be available on Steam immediately. Perhaps Epic simply didn’t feel the investment in timed exclusivity was of value, or Square didn’t. Either way, the recommended specs are a tall order, requiring the previous generation in CPU and GPU technology. Additionally, the download is a whopping 170GB. PC gaming is truly for the enthusiasts and continues to push the envelope.
Pricing and Inclusion
For gamers looking to get into Final Fantasy 16 for the first time, let’s talk about what’s on the table. The base game package comes at $50, while the complete edition will run you $70. Said complete edition includes two major DLC packages and their extra goodies. If you want the full experience, the complete edition is the way to go, to avoid waiting for DLC like early adopters did. The pricing is also interesting, as many AAA PC releases launch at $70 as a standard price point. To offer the base game and DLC for that price is a good bargain and shows that Square is looking to quickly reach the large PC market.
The Future of PC Ports
Earlier this year, Square-Enix seemed to state that after a disappointing launch of its two major PS5 releases (Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth), it would reconsider future console exclusivity windows. In announcing the heavily anticipated PC release of FF16, the developers have reiterated this fact. In this interview with Gamesradar, director of the game Hiroshi Takai says that it’s “possible – probably even likely” that future games might have day-one PC launches. He makes sure to clarify that every development team can make these choices independently, however. Takai has made it clear that this is his opinion, and may apply to his future projects at the company.
Final Thoughts
Final Fantasy 16 received good reviews and was a big push for Sony and its PS5 marketing. Fans were immediately desiring of a PC port, however, to see the best of both graphics and performance that the PS5 can’t provide. Square has repeatedly acknowledged the desire for faster PC releases and seems poised to pay attention to that audience more in the future. We don’t know how long it will take for this policy to be implemented, however. Will the third installment in the FF7 Remake trilogy launch on PC day one? Only time will tell. Regardless, players don’t have to wait much longer to get their hands on the PC version of Final Fantasy 16.
