Mafia: The Old Country is the fourth game in the Mafia franchise which started over 20 years ago in 2002. The last release in the Mafia series was Mafia: Definitive Edition which was a remake of the first game with the last game in the story being Mafia Three. While not much info has been released about Mafia: The Old Country, we do know that it’s set during the 1900s in Sicily. So far, each game in the Mafia franchise has largely taken place in the USA so getting a game set in Sicily where the Mafia originated sounds pretty interesting.
Trailer Breakdown

A short teaser trailer for Hangar 13‘s new game Mafia: The Old Country dropped today at Gamescom and it looks pretty interesting. In the trailer, we hear a voice-over from a character who is more than likely the Don/Godfather of the family our character is going to join. From how the person is speaking, it sounds like it’s during a Mafia initiation which is probably when the player-character becomes a member of that family. The setting of the trailer seems to be a villa in Sicily. A shotgun which seems to have just been used is lying on a table smoking with ammo next to it and earlier in the trailer we also saw a revolver.
We also see different paintings one of which is Cain killing Abel and a pocket knife is seen stabbed into a table. We see the backside of a man walk onto a balcony connected to the room which overlooks Sicily with a small lemon tree also on the balcony. This is more than likely the Don/Godfather and who was speaking. While the footage for the trailer is an in-game cinematic made for the trailer, the speech and what’s happening in the room may be at two different points narratively in the game. While there’s no blood seen in the room in the teaser, it’s likely the smoking shotgun may have just been used to execute someone.
Connected To The Other Mafia Games
Mafia, Mafia Two, and Mafia Three are all connected and while the teaser doesn’t set up a connection to the other three, we may see one in future trailers. In the first Mafia game, players assume the role of Tommy Angelo who is then murdered at the end of the game after a time-skip. In Mafia Two, the protagonist Vito Scaletta and his friend Joe Barbaro go on a mission where it’s revealed that they were the two hitmen who murdered Tommy for betraying Don Saleri.
The third game sees Vito return as an advisor/NPC who the player-character Lincoln Clay can recruit in his war against the Marcano Crime Family. Considering the first three games are all connected it’s hard to imagine Mafia: The Old Country won’t also be connected in a similar way. Considering Tommy’s former boss and the main antagonist Salieri from the first game was born in Sicily it’s possible we’ll be playing as him or even alongside him.
2025 Release
Mafia: The Old Country is currently slated to release in 2025 but besides the release year, no actual date has been given. Near the end of the teaser trailer, it said to look forward to more this December which could mean we see a longer trailer at the 2024 Game Awards. Mafia: The Old Country will be available for PC, PlayStation Five, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is currently available to Wishlist on Steam.
