In late 2003, Sonic Heroes was released with a 4-story team campaign. Dr. Eggman’s Metal Sonic set up the heroes’ stage for impending doom. He becomes a vicious threat when he transforms into Metal Overlord after absorbing the Chaos Emeralds’ energy. Now, he’s coming back with a vengeance in Shadow Generations.
Who Is Metal Overlord?
Metal Overlord is the final boss of Sonic Heroes. Team Sonic, Dark, Rose, and Chaotix are ordered to do various tasks throughout the story. Dr. Eggman did everything he could to try and stop these heroes from foiling his plans, or so it seems. Players would soon discover that the maniacal doctor became an accomplice of Metal Sonic.
This time, he has a large starfish head and metal jacket, calling himself Neo. He pretended to be Dr. Eggman while forcing the real doctor to build an army as a diversion. His mission was to become the ultimate life form.
First, Metal Sonic kidnaps Froggy and Chocolo the Chao to absorb the essence of Sonic Adveture’s Chaos. Then, as Dr. Eggman, he tested and observed the heroes’ abilities. Finally, he mixes the data with the Chaos Emeralds to become Metal Madness. When enraged, he becomes Metal Overlord, forming sharp wings around his waist.
Relations To Shadow
Sonic Heroes plays as a prequel to Shadow The Hedgehog and sequel to Sonic Adventure 2. In Team Dark’s story, Rogue infiltrates a hidden Eggman base in hopes of finding his hidden treasure. She discovers a pod containing a sleeping Shadow and then alerts E-123 Omega when she unlocks his pod. They become Team Dark for Omega’s aggression towards Eggman and Shadow’s amnesia.
After defeating the Egg Albatross at Rail Canyon, Shadow and Rouge discover a robot who looks like him. In the beginning scene, Omega identified Shadow as an Eggman robot. His reasoning becomes clear on why Omega attacked him, desiring to destroy them. At the end of their story, Rouge is concerned whether they are with the real Shadow. She and Omega discovered a hidden Eggman laboratory filled with Shadow’s clones.
She grows somewhat relieved when she mentions she will rob the Master Emerald from Knuckles. The scene plays after defeating Metal Overlord in Last Story. Shadow responds to her plan with, “Some things never changed, do they?” It references her past mission of gathering Master Emerald shards in SA2.
Two Sonic Copies
In the Doom Powers Shadow Generations trailer, Shadow is seen battling Metal Overlord in a flooded Chemical Plant. The ultimate robot facing the ultimate lifeform throughout the space-time continuum feels like a dream come true. But what could have inspired this encounter?
Gerald Robotnik’s Research
Eggman’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik designed Shadow the Hedgehog after the fabled ultimate lifeform 50 years earlier. Evidence of the ultimate lifeform can be found in Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Angel Island. There’s a mural of what can be assumed to be Eggman stealing the Master Emerald and awakening a super hedgehog. SA2 shows Gerald built a Chaos Altar in the Cannon’s Core.
In Shadow the Hedgehog, Gerald revealed in a found tape that he came in contact with the Black Comet. He sought help from Black Doom for the production of Project Shadow. SA2 revealed information about Shadow’s past when Rouge uncovered secret documents. Except Project Shadow refers to the Biolizard, the ultimate lifeform prototype.
This sends Shadow into a case of self-identity crisis. Thanks to Amy’s kind words, she reminded him about Maria’s promise to protect humanity. Her kindness is what prevented the hedgehog from becoming a monster.
Eggman’s Desire To Defeat Sonic
Through the events of Sonic the Hedgehog Trilogy, Eggman was defeated by Sonic multiple times. That’s when he came up with a brilliant idea. Instead of inventing a robot that can defeat Sonic, he can build himself Sonic’s copy. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduces the Sonic community to Metal Sonic as a result.
Sonic was lured into a chamber where Eggman observes the hedgehog fighting his prototype. Using the data from the fight, Eggman created Metal and Mecha Sonic. After both models failed, Eggman continuously built more Sonics. Players can find his development when they infiltrate his lab in Sonic Adventure within the Mystic Ruins.
However, none came close to Sonic CD’s Metal Sonic. He can adapt any ability and personality from anyone he interacts with. His first official monster form can be found in Knuckles Chaotix in his Kai form. Metal Sonic later used this newly discovered power to use in Sonic Heroes.
A Clash Between Lifeforms
Creative officer Takashi Iizuka confirmed Shadow Generations will have Shadow entering a time rift on August 22nd at Gamescom. In celebration of Sonic’s 32nd anniversary, Shadow will be facing foes from his past up to Sonic Frontiers. Metal Overlord will be representing the importance of the black hedgehog’s history. Without Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog would not exist and his story would have ended in Sonic Adventure 2.
