The August 27 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase revealed many amazing games, including a shadow drop of the Castlevania Dominus Collection. This collection contains three great Castlevania games that were originally released on Nintendo DS, as well as some unexpected extra titles. There is much more to this collection than meets the eye, as it far exceeds the expectations Konami set with their previous Castlevania compilations.
The Best Ways to Play Classic Games
The three games Konami is marketing most heavily in the Dominus Collection are Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia, and Portrait of Ruin. Each of these games are fan favorites and are finally available for platforms other than the Nintendo DS. Releasing these games on multiple platforms would always be challenging because of how much the DS’s hardware is integrated into them, but good solutions have been found.
The dual screens of the original games can be mapped in multiple different ways, giving the player many options for how they want their game to look. There is even an option to display three screens, which cleanly take up the entirety of modern displays and show the player’s stats in addition to the main gameplay and map.The touch screen is also integrated, using the PlayStation 5‘s touchpad on that particular version, and every version can use the controller instead of the touch screen by moving the analog stick and pressing a trigger button to emulate the touch screen.
The original version of Dawn of Sorrow was also heavily criticized for its touch controls, which forced the player to play a minigame to seal away each boss. Fail the minigame by being too slow or by drawing the seal too poorly, and the boss would recover health and drag out the fight. In this new version, an option exists to press buttons in a QTE-esque sequence to seal the boss, making this once-annoying minigame far more manageable.
A New Castlevania Game Snuck In
Haunted Castle was an old, obscure, arcade game in the Castlevania series. Included with this collection is not only the original Haunted Castle game but also a full reimagining of it that was remade from scratch, known as Haunted Castle Revisited. The original Haunted Castle is often seen as an interesting curiosity, but not much more. With a full remake that changes huge parts of the game, this classic title can now be enjoyed by all.
The Haunted Castle remake marks the first new major Castlevania game since Lords of Shadow 2 was released in 2014. It is also the first new classic-style Castlevania game to be released since 2009’s The Adventure ReBirth. Surprisingly, Konami is choosing to market Haunted Castle as a side mode in a collection of old games, rather than as the main attraction. Regardless, Haunted Castle drastically increases the value of this collection, as it provides an additional game that Castlevania fans have never played before.
The Value of Castlevania Dominus Collection
With four classic games included and a full remake of one of those games, the Castlevania Dominus Collection is a must-own both for fans of the series and newcomers looking to get into it. Valued at 25 USD digitally for Switch, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, it is a total steal to play these great versions of classic games and a new game on top of them. Anyone who has not played the DS Castlevanias owes it to themselves to pick up this collection, and fans of the series will be pleased to know that they’re getting an entirely new experience on top of it.
