All About the Cool Roscoe in Animal Crossing 2024

Roscoe Animal Crossing New Horizons

Roscoe is one of numerous villagers players can encounter in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The anthropomorphic, gossipy roster of animals is one of many aspects of the series that motivates players to return to their idyllic islands. These villagers fall into personality categories, each with their own preferred styles and hobbies. Finding the ones you want, however, can be a tiresome task. Here is what you should know about Roscoe and how to recruit him.

Who is Roscoe?

Roscoe is a black horse villager who first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori e+, a Japanese exclusive expansion of Animal Crossing for the Nintendo Gamecube. He has appeared in each subsequent mainline game since his debut. Roscoe is rather unique in that he is the only horse villager in the series that has the cranky personality. The raven-coated horse also features a set of piercing red eyes, giving him a foreboding appearance. Adding to this in New Horizons is his initial garb of a leather biker jacket, fitting for his tough guy persona. His birthday is on June 16,  making him a Gemini. Roscoe’s initial catchphrase is “nay,” a horsey play on words apt for his disagreeable temper.

Roscoe’s English name is a likely reference to the famous American jockey Roscoe Goose. Goose was a Thoroughbred racer in the early 20th century whose most famous win came about on May 10, 1913, when he captured first place in the Kentucky Derby with his colt, Donerail. The equestrian was later an inaugural inductee in the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fall in 1963. In the original Japanese version of the game, Roscoe’s name is instead “Schwarz.” This is more on the nose as Schwarz is the German word for black. In terms of hobbies, Roscoe has an affinity for music. In New Horizons, the player may find the black horse belting out a few songs whenever he fancies.

There are multiple ways to recruit the ebon horse to your island, though it could be time-consuming. While he can appear at the campsite, this is unlikely as the game has a pool of over 400 villagers from which it can randomly choose. The most direct route to acquiring Roscoe is through his Amiibo card. His card was part of the first series distributed but is easily accessible online. Once the player has his Amiibo card, they can head to the Resident Services building. Inside, there will be a Nook Stop kiosk that grants the option to scan an Amiibo card or figure. Bear in mind that this will require several days of work as Roscoe will not immediately join.

Should you not opt for the Amiibo route, there are other methods of garnering villagers. If your island has a free plot of land—meaning less than ten villagers—you can try your luck with Mystery Island scouting. This will require using Nook Miles Tickets and heading on tours via the airport. While it is feasible to find Roscoe on one of these tours, like the campsite, it is random whether he will found meandering on the mystery island. If none of the above options will work, perhaps the most direct way to encounter the elusive black horse would be to seek out online communities and negotiate with another player willing to part with him.

Giddy Up, Partner

Roscoe is far from the most illustrious of Animal Crossing‘s myriad villagers. But he does have many distinguishing traits that make him a worthwhile pick. A black horse with red eyes would be fitting for those attempting a dark or gothic island setting. While New Horizons doesn’t feature the extensive character interactions and interpersonal conflicts of previous titles, cranky villagers will still come off more irritable than others. In time, and perhaps through bribery with gifts, their hard exterior will slowly crumble and they will open up to you. Once Roscoe has endeared himself to you, the two of you can begin horsing around on your island.
