Blaze the Cat in Sonic The Hedgehog: A Guide

Blaze the Cat is a recurring character in the Sonic franchise, and one due for more importance. This princess made her impact in 2005’s platform epic, Sonic Rush. Blaze has made a variety of appearances since then. She’s notable for her appearance in 06, where she ultimately sacrifices her life to stop Iblis. Blaze is a fan-favorite, due to her design, and being one of a few female characters with a super form.

Blaze’s story

Sonic Rush details Blaze’s story; she hails from the Sol Dimension, a dimension separate from Sonic’s world. Blaze is the princess of her dimension and guardian of the ‘sol Emeralds’. These emeralds act as her dimension’s counterpart to the chaos emeralds, making her a counterpart to Knuckles. From a young age, Blaze knew about the responsibility that came with her powers. Not only was she the guardian of the sol emeralds, but she also had pyrokinetic gifts. Blaze’s powers caused her to close herself off from others and lead a life of solitude.

Blaze’s interactions with Sonic and Cream offer her some needed character development. At first, Blaze is reluctant to accept Sonic’s help and prefers to do things independently. Through Sonic and Cream Blaze learns to accept help when it is offered. This, naturally, leads to her awakening the power of the Sol Emeralds, and becoming even stronger. Blaze’s story can resonate with many people who think they go through life without help. However, like Blaze, every new friend offers a chance for you to grow.

Interactions with Silver

Blaze makes her next appearance in Sonic 06, where she plays a prominent role in the future. Blaze the Cat teams up with the telekinetic Silver the Hedgehog to defeat Iblis, the other half of Solaris, representing primal instinct. Blaze is Silver’s mentor, and her straightforward thinking offers him much assistance. Where Silver comes off as younger and naive, Blaze is a solid, friendly presence who keeps him from steering off the path. The two characters come off as a brother-sister duo with how they interact.

The finale of Sonic 06 offers an interesting conclusion to Blaze’s story in the game. Silver and Blaze fight against Iblis one more time in the future. Silver tries to seal the flames of disaster within his body to stop Iblis. However, he was an unworthy vessel, and Blaze had to take over. As much as Silver begged her not to, Blaze managed to tame the flames of disaster and seal them in her body. Blaze, meanwhile, is determined to keep Iblis gone, and she reassures him that she’ll be fine. The entire sequence is a heartfelt goodbye, and Silver watches as Blaze fades away, returning to her dimension.

Blaze’s powers

Blaze’s pyrokinesis makes her a force to be reckoned with. Like a meteor, she can cloak herself in flames and strike targets. She can create dangerous fire tornados by enveloping herself in fire. Blaze’s control over fire allows her to manipulate flames from alternative sources. Because of Blaze’s fire abilities, her soul is always alight with flame. This naturally, makes Blaze a suitable candidate to handle Iblis’ uncontrollable fires. Blaze’s strength is on another level, and she’s a perfect match against Sonic’s speed.

Blaze’s transformation, Burning Blaze, lets her draw out the full power of the Sol Emeralds. In this form, Blaze’s body takes on a lightened pink hue. Her fire abilities are amplified, creating destructive fireballs, and propelling herself even further with her flames. Burning Blaze is a rarity, as she is one of the few female characters in the Sonic franchise to have a canonical transformation. This would not be repeated until 18 years later in Sonic Origins Plus. In this game, Amy Rose, a hammer-wielding ally of Sonic, received her super form for the first time.

Blaze is a pretty big deal

Blaze the Cat is an underused character in the franchise, but she has gained praise from the sonic fandom. Blaze is the guardian of her dimension’s treasures, and she is an accomplished fighter. She has agency, and she’s proven herself a capable hero. It is easy to see why the fans would love such an endearing character who brings so much to the franchise.

Sonic Rush remains a well-loved title, held up by its visuals, stage design, and music. The Sol Dimension opens many more storytelling opportunities, especially for visits. Blaze’s story is never done, and we could easily find a reason to spin a new Sonic Rush title. It would give her another chance to show off her strong character arc and offer several fun playing opportunities. Blaze the Cat may not be everyone’s favorite, but regardless, she still is an interesting character in her own right.
