Minecraft‘s blocky world has plenty of bosses and mini-bosses to fight. The game’s bosses can be challenging, from the axe-wielding Piglin Brute to the Ender Dragon soaring the skies. One boss in particular, the Elder Guardian, is unique as it’s the only underwater boss in the game. Although this boss can be difficult for some players, being properly prepared makes this fight much easier.
Preparing For The Fight
As for any boss, you should be equipped with diamond armor or better, a diamond sword, and a shield. Enchantments are optional but recommended. Potions and golden apples will also drastically help in this battle. You can skip out on water-breathing potions if you bring some doors to place down, as these blocks create an air pocket within this underwater structure. This is cheaper than using potions but less convenient. A pickaxe is required to collect the gold stockpile within the monument which can be found in the central section. However, most players will need to gather this gold after fighting the Elder Guardian due to the Mining Fatigue effect it spreads.
Finding And Defeating The Elder Guardian
The Elder Guardian lurks in the elusive Ocean Monument where it guards a large stockpile of golden blocks. To find this large structure, head to a deep ocean biome of any temperature. These temples are uncommon, so it may take a while to stumble across one. If you plan on mining through the monument, be careful not to get too close. This may result in you receiving the Mining Fatigue debuff from the Elder Guardian. This debuff prevents you from being able to mine blocks. There will be three Elder Guardians within each Ocean Monument. One will spawn within the very top of the structure while the others will spawn in the left and right wings.
Various other mobs will surround the outside of the Ocean Monument including normal Guardians, Drowned, and Squid. For the most part, the Guardians outside of the monument will be too preoccupied with killing everything to notice you. Swim through the front entrance and make your way to the first Elder Guardian. The boss has three methods of defense: inflicting Mining Fatigue, using its laser attack, and unsheathing its spikes. The laser takes several seconds to charge but packs a hard punch. Hiding behind an object will reset the wind-up timer. If cornered or attacked with a melee weapon, the Elder Guardian unsheaths its spikes and deals Thorns damage if hit.
Loot Drops And Trivia
As of Minecraft 1.21, the Elder Guardian has a guaranteed drop of one Wet Sponge and 0-2 Prismarine Shards upon defeat. There is also a 20% chance it will drop the new Tide Armor Trim. Random fish and Prismarine Crystals can also be dropped from the boss. All of these drops (excluding the Wet Sponge and Tide Armor Trim) can be enhanced with the Looting enchantment. Sponge rooms can also be found in the monument, however, they aren’t guaranteed. Although the Elder Guardian has been declared a boss by developers over at Mojang, it lacks a health bar like other bosses have. The Elder Guardian isn’t the hardest enemy to defeat in Minecraft, but it certainly is a formidable foe.
