All About the Cabot House in Fallout 4

Discovering the Cabot House in Fallout 4

As players explore the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, they can undertake various quests outside the main storyline. While it would seem the Sole Survivor’s main interest ought to be finding their lost child, the player is free to pursue other leads. One such interesting lead will begin when the player discovers Cabout House, a well-guarded home amid the city. With robotic guards and a locked front door, players aren’t free to barge in. However, players who find their way into the house will find themselves down a road of secrets buried beneath the Commonwealth. Let’s talk about everything connected to the Cabot House.

Doing Odd Jobs

Players can first gain entrance to Cabot House by speaking with the ghoul mercenary Edward Deegan. He can be met in a variety of locations and will approach the player with an offer of work. This will allow the player to enter Cabot House by speaking over the home’s intercom with its owner, Jack Cabot. The player will be told of a missing package and sent off to find it. The Sole Survivor will fight through several raiders around Parsons State Insane Asylum to recover the package, which is simply called the Mysterious Serum. By returning the serum or successfully lying about it being gone, the player can continue down the quest line.

Next, Jack Cabot needs someone to locate his wayward sister Emogene. She can be found cavorting with the NPCs of another storyline, Brother Thomas and his cult. Whether through violence, intimidation, or simple skullduggery, Emogene can be found and convinced to return home. She tells the Sole Survivor something she probably shouldn’t, however. Namely, that the serum they recovered is necessary to help the Cabot family maintain their youth. This is a shocking development and is followed by more excitement. Upon trying to receive a reward for the quest, the player learns Edward Deegan is holed up in the Insane Asylum which is under assault by raiders.

The Secret of Cabot House

The player can uncover the truth as they work with Jack Cabot to re-secure the Insane Asylum. The Cabot family predates the Great War, much like the player. In fact, they are even older. Living since the 19th century, the mysterious serum has kept them alive for over four hundred years. The serum is extracted from the blood of Jack and Emogene’s father, Lorenzo. He discovered an ancient artifact in the Arabian Peninsula and returned with it to his family in Boston. The artifact seems to have driven Lorenzo to a form of madness, and Jack has kept him underneath the asylum for all this time.

The artifact grants Lorenzo tremendous physical and mental abilities. This explains why the serum created from his blood seems to reverse the aging process when taken. The Cabot family has lived all these years with Jack studying the artifact in the hopes of understanding it and freeing his father. As the player makes their way through the Insane Asylum and collect its rewards, they end up having to decide Lorenzo’s fate. They can allow the raiders he is mind-controlling to free him, free Lorenzo themselves, or kill him directly or using the precautions of his cell. Should he die, the Cabot family will accept their mortality. Should he live, they will certainly face his wrath.

Fantastical Lore Implications

The Cabot House quest line goes in an odd direction, likely not what the player expects. What first seems to be a simple set of tasks for some wealthy survivors of the Commonwealth’s struggles is in fact a dive into one of the more supernatural elements of Fallout’s canon. Lorenzo is under the belief that the relic dates back to a precursor civilization that is responsible for guiding humanity down its current path. He believes they are stronger and more intelligent than the humans of now and wishes to uncover their secrets. Jack has come to believe his father is right, and they both seem to now think this precursor civilization comes from beyond the Earth.

Of course, those familiar with Fallout’s lore know that aliens are real. Present in both Fallout 4 and its predecessors, spaceships and alien laser guns offer proof that the Earth is being monitored by another species. What their full role in Fallout’s past is remains a mystery, though this quest suggests they have been affecting humans for a very long time. As the player chooses their ending in this quest, they may unleash Lorenzo on the Commonwealth and see him pursue what the artifact wishes him to do. It is uncertain what the aliens are trying to accomplish through things like the artifact, but it is perhaps a story Bethesda will one day tell us in full.

Final Thoughts

Finding your way into the Cabot House quest series is a fun surprise in Fallout 4. Players will get to interact with some interesting NPCs and make their way through a difficult dungeon of sorts filled with enemies. The rewards are worthwhile, and the players have a real impact on the game’s world. Bethesda seems to be dropping a large variety of lore directions for the series to go in, and this is one of the more unique. While content with aliens has been pursued before in Fallout 3’s DLC, we still are lacking in firm answers. Perhaps the next game in the series will give us the concrete answers we are looking for.
