Beardo is a strange villager you can discover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Animal Crossing games are recognized for their myriad characters and gameplay features. Some characters, known as villagers, can become neighbors to the player. Befriending and interacting with your villagers is part of the daily loop of the games. However, some of these villagers can be divisive for various reasons, such as their looks or personality. One of the more reviled of these characters is Beardo.
Who is Beardo?
Beardo is a turquoise-colored bear villager who was introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS. His most obvious and striking physical feature is his facial hair: Beardo maintains a large, brown mustache alongside curly mutton chops. Ironically, despite his name, he does not have a beard. The naming convention is retained from Japan’s version of the games, where he is called Baird. This is more apt relative to his English name as Japanese does not distinguish between mustaches and beards. The contrast between his facial hair and the lack of hair on his head gives Beardo a balding appearance. His birthday is on September 27, making him a Libra.
Like another unfortunate bear villager, Beardo is not the most popular of characters. He consistently ranks at the bottom of popularity surveys in the community. Some have even gone so far as to call him the worst villager in the game. While hyperbolic, indeed, Beardo doesn’t reach the vaunted heights of icons like Marshal or Raymond. Part of the vitriol directed towards the blue bear is his uncanny appearance and smug personality. Smug villagers tend to make flirtatious comments to the player. Getting hit on by this tweed-wearing maniac is far from ideal, though, like any abhorred villager, he still has a dedicated fanbase willing to defend his name.
How to Get Beardo
If you are bold enough to desire Beardo as a compatriot, there are different paths you can take to acquire him. One way to recruit him is through the campsite as a visitor. Be aware that this is chosen randomly from a large pool of villagers, so he is far from guaranteed to appear. A more direct way to get the tweed-wearing bear is through his Amiibo card. Inside the Resident Services building is a Nook Stop kiosk that can be used to scan Amiibo cards or figures and invite villagers to the campsite. Bear in mind that this method will require multiple days of effort as they will not immediately join your island.
If you don’t want to spend real money on Animal Crossing, there are other ways to encounter Beardo. Assuming you have not hit the maximum number of residents on your island, you can try to scout him on a Mystery Island tour. This requires Nook Miles Tickets and traveling via the airport. While you can find him on one of these tours, it requires luck in much the same way as the campsite. A further option would be to seek out one of the myriad communities associated with the game. If someone is willing to part with Beardo, it is unlikely you will have to trade much in return given his popularity, or lack thereof.
I Mustache If You Like Him
Not every character in Animal Crossing is going to be a fan favorite. Some players will gravitate to the cutesier villagers while others are more enamored with cool or stylish ones. While Beardo ranks at the bottom of the barrel as far as popular perception goes, there is nothing wrong with liking him. Some people find him cute and charming; at the very least, his looks make him unique compared to other villagers. If you can brush off the insults, Beardo may just become a beloved member of your island community. Just don’t let him hug you—it’s supposed to be unbearable.
