Adol has met a variety of characters across his adventures in the Ys series. However, while most only appear in their debut games, this isn’t true for Dogi. Instead, he’s appeared in many of the games, and he was even playable in one game. With him likely to play a role in the story of Nordics, let’s take a look at who he is as a character.
The Thief
Dogi was introduced in the first game as a member of Goban Tovah‘s band of thieves. Specifically, he’s Goban’s right-hand man, though he doesn’t appear until later in the game. Goban’s men are guarding the entrance to the final dungeon, to keep the legions of demons inside at bay. The door into the final dungeon only opens from the outside, and Goban tells Adol that Dogi is still inside the dungeon. Following the end of the second game, he abandons his life as a thief to travel the world with Adol.
The Wallcrusherg
Dogi is one of the physically strongest characters in the series. His moniker as the Wallcrusher is well-earned. In Ys 1 he’s shown punching a hole in a brick wall to help Adol escape from a room in the final dungeon. Any time he’s shown attacking something, such as enemies in Lacrimosa of Dana, it’s always with punches.
He’s a playable character in Ys 7, where his penchant for punching enemies becomes a gameplay ability and his “weapons” are reinforced gloves. While he isn’t playable in Lacrimosa of Dana or Monstrum Nox, in those games he participates in raids with support skills. Even his Extra Skill is a powerful punch that deals a lot of damage.
Adol’s Adventuring Partner
In many of the other Ys games, Dogi often accompanies Adol on his adventures. To date, he’s appeared in 6 games: Ys 1, Oath in Felghana, Lacrimosa of Dana, Ys 7, and Monstrum Nox. By the time of Monstrum Nox, he’s used to Adol’s adventures including a lot of strange and even supernatural elements. This tolerance, bordering on nonchalance like Adol’s, took many adventures to develop. With Nordics taking place after the first two games in the series, perhaps it will show an earlier step in his acceptance of the kind of things that happen when he’s accompanying Adol.
In Oath in Felghana, he plays a large role in the story of the game. Felghana is revealed to be his home, where he had a reputation for tormenting the villagers when he was a child. As it turns out, he left Felghana 8 years before the events of the game to go on a journey of self-discovery, leading to him becoming a thief under Goban’s employ in Esteria.
Final Thoughts
While not appearing in every game, Dogi is nonetheless a staple character of the Ys series. He’s Adol’s best and closest friend, with the two teasing each other even as they team up to save the day again. With Nordics releasing next month, what version of Adol’s traveling partner will we see in a game set after Adol’s first adventures? How will he support his best friend in this latest entry?
