In the Minecraft 1.20 update ‘Tales and Trails’, two unique blocks were added to the game. These suspicious blocks spawn in various in-game structures ranging from desert temples to ocean ruins. When brushed, these blocks will reveal the item trapped inside. Each structure that spawns with suspicious blocks has its own drop table. From pottery sherds to enhance your decorating skills to an ancient egg, suspicious blocks drop numerous pieces of exciting loot.
What Are Suspicious Blocks?
There are two types of Suspicious Blocks in Minecraft: Suspicious Gravel and Suspicious Sand. These blocks vary slightly in appearance from their normal counterparts. Suspicious Blocks appear disheveled and somewhat darker than their base, and they hold a variety of treasures including ores, tools, armor trims, and pottery shards. These blocks are fragile and are affected by gravity. They will break once they make contact with the ground. When this happens, the block will not drop its internal loot. Breaking Suspicious Blocks with a shovel will also yield zero drops. The only way to acquire the hidden loot is to extract it with a Brush.
Ocean Ruins Contain An Ancient Egg
Both warm and cold oceans are home to various ocean ruins. These structures are typically surrounded by Drowned and sometimes carry loot chests. In ocean ruins, suspicious blocks have 10 items in their drop table. Suspicious gravel is found in cold ocean ruins, while suspicious sand can be found in warm ocean ruins. Coal, emerald, wheat, wooden hoe, and gold nuggets have a 13.3% chance to be extracted, while an iron axe and the Blade, Explorer, Mourner, and Plenty pottery sherds all have a 6.7% chance to drop. Pottery sherds can be crafted into decorative pots.
Warm ocean ruins have almost the same drops as cold oceans do. Coal, emerald, wheat, wooden hoe, and gold nuggets have a 13.3% chance to be extracted, while an iron axe and the Angler, Shelter, or Snort pottery sherds all have a 6.7% chance to drop. Along with the pottery sherds, another item that has a 6.7% drop chance is the Sniffer Egg. This egg can be hatched into the prehistoric Sniffer. This dinosaur-like mob is passive and spends its time wandering and sniffing the ground. Every few minutes, the Sniffer drops to the ground and digs up an ancient seed. This seed will either be a Torchflower seed or a Pitcher Plant.

Also added in update 1.20 is the Trail Ruin structure. This structure can spawn in jungles, taigas, snowy taigas, and all old-growth forest biomes. Trail ruins resemble buried and ruined villages from long ago and can now be used as archaeological sites. Two types of Suspicious Gravel spawn in these structures: normal Suspicious Gravel and Rare Suspicious Gravel. The drop table for Trail Ruins is quite extensive with 42 different possibilities for loot altogether. The loot ranges from simple dyes to music discs and armor trims, which are valuable commodities- especially in multiplayer Minecraft.
At a 4.4% drop chance from normal Suspicious Trail Ruin Gravel is a brick, emerald, wheat, wooden hoe, and a variety of dyes and candles. At 2.2% is a beetroot seed, coal, flower pot, lead, string, wheat seed, gold nugget, dead bush, and a variety of stained window panes and hanging signs. Rare Suspicious Gravel can drop the Burn, Danger, Friend, Heart, Heartbreak, Howl, and Sheaf pottery sherds at an 8.3% chance. Also at this percentage is the possibility of the Host, Shaper, Raiser, and Wayfinder Armor Trims. Armor Trims can be used to aesthetically enhance armor. The Relic music disc can be extracted from this block at an 8.3% chance as well.
Minecraft’s Deserts Yield Diamonds
Two structures in Minecraft’s deserts spawn Suspicious Sand. These structures are the desert temple and the desert well. Suspicious sand in desert temples can be found near the back of the structure. Digging down will reveal a reservoir of Suspicious Sand to extract. From a desert temple’s Suspicious Sand, an emerald, gunpowder, TNT, or a diamond can be extracted with a Brush at a 12.5% chance. Also at this percentage are the Archer, Miner, Prize, and Skull pottery sherds. Desert wells only hold a few Suspicious Sand. A brick, emerald, stick, and suspicious stew all have a 12.5% chance of being extracted, while the Arms Up and Brewer pottery sherds have a 25% chance.
Trivia And Closing Thoughts
This guide’s focus is on the Java Edition of the game. Most of the information translates over to the Bedrock edition, however some drop rates are modified between versions of the game. Archaeology was shown off in 2020 during Minecraft Live but was hardly touched on for a couple of years afterward. Extracting a pottery sherd from a suspicious block will heed the ‘Respecting The Remnants’ advancement while extracting a Sniffer egg will give the player the ‘Smells Interesting’ advancement.
